Brighton and Hove Albion have been known for their major sale prices in recent years, and the current football space has gone crazy for transfer fees.
Let's zoom in on defenders in this part, looking at what they're worth to Brighton if the transfer figures were up to fans…
We are exclusively talking about players who have actually played for the club and therefore excluding Luka Vuskovic, Pascal Struijk , Costinha, and Michael Svoboda .
Lewis Dunk
Worth to Brighton: £50 million
Okay, okay. It may seem a bit steep for Dunk these days. But… is it worth to Brighton? This is perhaps an undervaluation.
The Seagulls infamously accepted a bid from Nottingham Forest in January for the skipper, as they believed he'd earned his right to leave. Left confused, Dunk rejected the offer. To this day, a mind-boggling decision mid-season.
Dunk is everything to Albion. Captain, leader, legend. On top of everything else, a top-level ball-playing defender.
Whether it be spraying long passes, chesting the ball back to his goalkeeper under pressure, or popping up with a goal in the box… it would still be premature to let Dunk leave the club.
Olivier Boscagli
Worth to Brighton: £15 million to £20 million
Certainly the interesting player of the bunch. Boscagli's crossing and passing ability is very good, and perhaps if we were simply grading that, his fee would be higher.
With that said, though, we're rating defenders. Defenders need to be able to defend, and that's been the issue with Boscagli. Often getting caught out of position or over the top balls.
With some improvement, there's still a strong player in there which can be unlocked, but sharper defensive capabilities are required.
Ferdi Kadioglu
Worth to Brighton: £55 million
Albion's Player of the Season as voted for by the fans last season, and rightly so.
Kadioglu is an everything full-back. Inverting into midfield, bombing forward and defending last-ditch.
The Turkish international didn't have the best World Cup and therefore brings his value down slightly. However, considering he was signed for £35 million, anything less than a £20 million profit would feel like a robbery!
Mats Wieffer :
Worth to Brighton: £35 million
I like Wieffer, and in a parallel universe, he is in the midfield section of this series.
However, Fabian Hürzeler prefers him as a right-back, and that's what he is these days!
He is a good one. Good in the challenge and inverting. He carries the ball forward well and can whip a good ball into the box.
Wieffer's drawbacks come defensively, mostly in positioning. Because of his driving forward, he's often caught out or ball-watching when there's a counter attack. A more natural right-back would possibly solve this issue.
£35 million is a £10 million profit on what we signed him for, and that's probably somewhat fair.
Igor Julio:
Worth to Brighton: whatever anyone offers
Igor has been subject to a mass amount of bids, if social media rumours are to be believed.
The Brazilian could be on the move this summer, and it seems like the Seagulls are trying their hardest to move him on.
For that reason, setting a figure that would price anyone out would seem rather crazy.
Eiran Cashin :
Worth to Brighton: £5 million
There is still value in Eiran Cashin, despite his bad reputation.
While he may not be cut out for Premier League football at this stage, he did have a good loan with Blackburn Rovers last season.
A glimmer of hope for Cashin, who could do with raising his stock again.
Maxim De Cuyper
Worth to Brighton: £25 million
De Cuyper had a good World Cup with Belgium . We all know what he's good at by now, particularly with the ball at his feet. Ball striking and crossing the ball are his best qualities, but often left wanting more defensively. De Cuyper's ball-striking ability is probably his best asset, but he lacks the pace or individual quality to take on his man like a winger would.
Whether he be out of position or losing his man completely, De Cuyper is definitely better going forward than he is backwards.
While capable of making last-ditch challenges, an offer of £25 million would seem fair considering his various worries.
