The Denver Broncos might lose defensive coordinator Vance Joseph.
Joseph is considered a top candidate for the 2026 head coach hiring cycle (and quarterbacks coach Davis Webb might also be a candidate for promotions elsewhere).
If Joseph ends up landing a head coach job with an NFL team, Denver would receive a third-round compensatory draft pick in 2026 and another third-round pick in 2027 as part of the NFL's Rooney Rule that rewards teams for developing minority coaches and executives.
To be eligible for the comp picks, a team must employ a coach/executive for at least two consecutive seasons, and this is Joseph's third year as a coordinator with the Broncos .
Joseph previously served as the Broncos' head coach from 2017-2018. Denver went 11-21 during that period, but it was a time when the franchise was struggling to find a quarterback , and Joseph did not get to handpick his staff. He is now back with the Broncos, coaching one of the best defenses in the NFL, and other clubs have taken notice.
If Denver loses Joseph this offseason, one potential in-house candidate to replace him could be Jim Leonhard , an overqualified defensive backs coach who has interviewed for DC jobs with NFL teams in the past.
For now, Joseph and the Broncos remain focused on the 2025 campaign . After the season ends, though, Denver might have several coaching positions to fill in the spring.
