After starting quarterback Bo Nix suffered a broken ankle during a 33-30 overtime win over the Buffalo Bills on Saturday, the Denver Broncos plan to start backup quarterback Jarrett Stidham in the AFC Championship game next weekend.
"Stiddy's ready to go," Broncos coach Sean Payton told reporters on Saturday after announcing the news of Nix's season-ending injury. After undergoing surgery on Tuesday, Nix will miss the AFC title game — and the Super Bowl, if Denver makes it past the winner of the New England Patriots- Houston Texans game.
Stidham, 29, is a seventh-year quarterback who signed with the Broncos as a backup in 2023. He has completed 59.4% of his passes in his career for 1,422 yards with eight touchdowns against eight interceptions. Stidham is 1-3 as a starter, including a 1-1 record with Denver after Russell Wilson was benched for the final two games of the 2023 season.
Stidham has not attempted a pass in a regular season game since that 2023 campaign. He completed 78.9% of his passes for 376 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions in two preseason games in August.
With Stidham bumped up to QB1, third-string quarterback Sam Ehlinger will serve as QB2.
