When the Denver Broncos released their updated depth chart for Week 1, third-year pass rusher Jonah Elliss was listed as a starting outside linebacker across from Nik Bonitto .
That's not surprising, but it's unofficial confirmation that Elliss is set to start in place of Jonathon Cooper , who is ineligible to play while on the commissioner's exempt list .
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Elliss said he hasn't changed his preparation after being named a starter.
"I don't want to make it a bigger deal than it is," Elliss said, via the Denver Gazette 's Kyle Fredrickson. "I just want to go out and put my best foot forward. Not freak out. Just be in the moment. God's blessed me with where I am, so I'm just going to try to make the most of it."
Elliss (6-2, 246 pounds) was picked by Denver in the third round of the 2024 NFL draft out of Utah. He has totaled 11 quarterback hits and 7.5 sacks through 30 career games as a rotational pass rusher behind Bonitto and Cooper.
Elliss is now poised to make his first career start when the Broncos face the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday Night Football in Week 1 on Sept. 14. Elliss has a big opportunity ( potentially against KC's backup tackle ), and — as he said — now it's up to him to make the most of it.
