After Jim Schwartz submitted his resignation as the Cleveland Browns ' defensive coordinator, the team cast a wide net and met with several candidates to replace him. Head coach Todd Monken wanted to find someone who would run a similar style of defense after praising the system in place during his opening press conference as Browns head coach.
Ultimately, the Browns decided to hire a Robert Saleh disciple in Atlanta Falcons defensive pass game coordinator Mike Rutenberg . In an article published on Clevelandbrowns.com , Monken said this about why he ultimately wanted Rutenberg to replace Schwartz.
"He'd been in a similar system, but not the exact system, because Jim (Schwartz) was unique. And they can say attacking style, but then there's attacking style, which is what they've done here up front. And I think that background of being a four-down attacking style, but not exact, (and) to add some things that they had done before that I thought would mesh really well with the current staff, was a big part of that. And I thought his energy, his ability to teach, his juice, I mean, it popped. It was what I was looking for."
Schwartz was one of the better defensive coordinators in the league. It will be hard to replace him, but it seems like they made a good hire for the players and system already in place.
