The New York Jets could face an important decision on defensive end Will McDonald IV as the November 10 NFL trade deadline approaches. The former first-round pick has shown flashes of pass-rushing ability, but his place in the defensive rotation has become less secure since rookie linebacker David Bailey arrived.
The Jets selected Bailey with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. The rookie has quickly become a key part of Aaron Glenn's defensive front. He has already registered 5.5 NFL sacks, alongside 21 solo tackles. McDonald, however, is no slouch, as the 2023 first-round selection has accumulated 23.5 career sacks and four forced fumbles in 54 games. New York is sitting at 2-5 and has significant decisions to make about its long-term roster.
Why the Cleveland Browns make sense for Will McDonald IV
Cleveland is a logical potential destination because adding another athletic edge defender could improve its defensive-front rotation. McDonald offers speed, explosiveness and the ability to attack offensive tackles from the outside. He could complement the Browns' existing defensive-line talent and provide another option on passing downs.
McDonald is 27 and already has two sacks and 14 pressures this season, showing that he can still disrupt quarterbacks despite his reduced role.
"A surplus of pass rushers on the roster could prompt GM Darren Mougey to trade him away for draft capital to help in the rebuild," NFL.com's Bucky Brooks said.
Cleveland could acquire a player entering his prime rather than relying entirely on developing rookies. The key question would be the draft compensation New York demands and whether the Browns view him as a long-term defensive piece.
Other potential landing spots could include the 49ers and Bengals
San Francisco could be an attractive destination because its defensive front has dealt with injuries, particularly Nick Bosa's calf problem. Although the 49ers have already brought back DeForest Buckner from the Indianapolis Colts, another edge rusher could provide additional depth. McDonald could give defensive coordinator Raheem Morris another option alongside Bosa, Keion White and the other young pass rushers.
The Cincinnati Bengals could also explore McDonald's availability as they look to strengthen their defensive front for the playoff race. The Bengals have recorded 10 sacks so far, and adding another proven pass rusher could improve their ability to pressure opposing quarterbacks.
