The hockey world was stunned when the Vegas Golden Knights fired Bruce Cassidy with eight games to go in the season. They hired John Tortorella, who has them on the doorstep of a playoff series win. Meanwhile, Cassidy is making the media rounds, breaking down the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Cassidy told the Leafs Morning Take podcast about his career aspirations after his Golden Knights run.
"Yeah, it would be kind of cool to do it," Cassidy said. "I tell you what would be cool: to win a Stanley Cup in a Canadian city right now because it's been a while. That would be something else."
"Usually the first thing you think of is the market, does the team have a chance, how does it impact your family, then you worry about the city later. Is ownership solid, things like that," Cassidy continued.
Cassidy won the 2023 Stanley Cup with the Golden Knights after a successful run with the Boston Bruins . The Ottawa native has never been the head coach in a Canadian market, so it would be a new challenge for him. For that to come true, though, a Canadian job opening would have to emerge. That has not happened yet, but it cannot be ruled out.
The Maple Leafs are not going to make a decision on Craig Berube's future until a new general manager is hired. Toronto does not appear close to a championship, but the opportunity to coach Auston Matthews for at least two seasons could be intriguing.
The Edmonton Oilers are one game away from elimination and have been the closest to a Stanley Cup in recent years. If Kris Knoblauch pays the price for losing to the Anaheim Ducks , could Cassidy be Edmonton's first call?
Cassidy may not be out of a job for long, and he has made it known where he'd like to go.
