BOSTON — Charlie McAvoy’s anger boiled over in the final minutes of the Bruins ’ season-ending loss to the Sabres on Friday at TD Garden.
McAvoy and Zach Benson were each racing to the corner with icing in the balance with 1:31 remaining and Boston trailing 4-1.
Benson, who had been angering the Bruins all series for his after-the-whistle activity, appeared to slew-foot the Bruins defenseman, sending McAvoy sprawling to the ice.
The referee raised his arm to call a tripping penalty on Benson, but that wasn’t enough for McAvoy, who jumped up and slashed Benson.
The two had to be separated. McAvoy was given a 5-minute major and a game-misconduct ending his season a few minute early.
