The Bruins seemed to have pushed the right buttons heading into the 2026-27 season. Boston traded for JJ Peterka and recently aimed to get younger to earn their first Stanley Cup since 2010-2011.
That latter point, especially with Frederic Brunet and Matthew Poitras getting chances, may help their cause.
A youth movement is being pushed in Boston, starting with tonight's game against the Senators. Brunet and Poitras will get opportunities to showcase what they can do. The pressure is on, though the Bruins have faith in the duo.
"We'll see how it ends up," Coach Marco Sturm said about Brunet via The Boston Globe . "I think the start [and the score] will tell a little bit. This is a kid we want to develop the right way, so I'm not going to throw him in if he's not ready for [special-team] situations. We think very highly of him, and we want him to get better every day."
"I just want to see his strength and just being smart and skate and use those two big boys right beside him," Sturm said of Poitras via Boston.com . "I think it's a good combination. I think it's going to be good for him. He'll get some touches and play a simple game and focus on those little things."
Brunet was picked by the Bruins in the 2022 NHL Draft. He had 20 assists for Providence before playing one game for Boston during the 2024-25 season. Last season with Providence, he had 12 goals, 24 assists, and 36 points. Now, Brunet plays in his second official NHL game.
Also picked in the 2022 NHL Draft, Poitras has played in seven games for the Bruins, accumulating five goals, 20 assists, and 27 points. He spent nearly all of last year with Providence.
Changing things up, Boston is ready to see what the young Bruins can do. Will they take advantage, or crack under pressure?
