The Boston Bruins have been riding high on the contributions of their talented young forward James Hagens this season, but the team received a significant blow this week that could disrupt their early season momentum. After a promising start to the 2026-27 campaign, the 19 year old's availability has suddenly become a pressing concern for a franchise that has leaned heavily on his surprising two way impact.
The Bruins officially placed Hagens on injured reserve on November 7, simultaneously recalling Mikey Eyssimont from their AHL affiliate in Providence. The move means Hagens will be sidelined for at least a week, with some fans speculating he could be eligible to return as early as the following Saturday.
The injury traces back to Boston's 6-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins, where Hagens logged 15 shifts and nearly 12 minutes of ice time before the incident occurred. While skating through the neutral zone at speed, he absorbed a cross-check to the lower back from Pittsburgh defenseman Samuel Girard. After attempting to continue with a deke move, Hagens visibly struggled and had difficulty getting himself off the ice. He did not return to the game.
The loss stings for a Bruins team that has watched Hagens emerge as one of the NHL's most impressive rookies this fall. Through 16 games, the young forward had tallied six goals and 12 points, placing him among the top first year scorers in the league. Head coach Marco Sturm had deployed him as a third line winger alongside Casey Mittelstadt and Elias Lindholm, and that trio had become Boston's most effective combination, posting a plus five goal differential in 13 games together.
What has made Hagens' rookie campaign so remarkable is not simply his point production but his willingness to do the dirty work. Among the nine rookies with the most blocked shots this season, Hagens stands as the only forward, ranking fourth overall with 19 blocks. Five of his six goals have come from high-danger, net-front scoring chances, an area where the Bruins desperately needed help after finishing 29th in high-danger shot opportunities during the 2025-26 season.
At 5-foot-11 and still under 200 pounds, Hagens has shown no hesitation about battling in the tough areas of the game, a trait that has made him invaluable but also leaves him exposed to the kind of physical punishment that led to this injury. His hockey sense and competitive drive have allowed him to punch above his weight class, but the cross-check from Girard served as a harsh reminder of the toll the NHL takes on smaller forwards.
Hagens is currently in the second year of a three year entry level deal that began during a brief NHL stint last season. Boston selected him seventh overall in the 2025 NHL Draft, and his rapid development has validated that investment. Eyssimont's recall gives the Bruins a stopgap solution, with some observers noting it could also serve as a showcase opportunity for the veteran forward ahead of potential trade discussions. Still, replacing Hagens' unique blend of skill, grit, and two-way reliability will be no simple task for as long as he remains out of the lineup.
