Last season's English League Cup runners-up Arsenal crashed out in the round of 16 of this year's tournament.
Fleetwood Town, sitting just 18th out of 24 teams in League Two, England's fourth tier, stunned the Gunners on Tuesday (27).
And Brazilian Bruno Guimarães ended up being the "villain" for Arteta's side.
After fighting back to draw 1-1 and take the tie to penalties, Arsenal saw their No. 39 miss his spot-kick as they lost 5-3 in the shootout away from home.
As well as missing four injured players, Arteta rested several other regular starters.
The first "highlight" of the night was an eight-minute stoppage caused by a drone flying over the pitch at Highbury Stadium.
After play resumed, Aaron Loupalo-Bi put the hosts ahead in the 21st minute.
Gyokeres equalised five minutes into the second half.
And Bruno Guimarães—one of those rested—was brought on in the 82nd minute.
Arsenal had Dowman sent off in the 85th minute but held on.
Fleetwood were leading 4-3 before the Brazilian stepped up to take his penalty.
And they maintained their advantage after Lynch "repeated" Norwegian goalkeeper Nyland's save at the World Cup.
