University of Akron men's basketball coach John Groce regularly talks with media members about the importance of having a "culture" within the program.

Groce encourages his coaches and players to have a positive mindset and be leaders as the primary faces of the program, but there is another person behind the scenes who in many ways is just as important in this era of name, image and likeness (NIL).

That person is Bud Wentz , the founder of the Fear the Roo Collective and the President and Senior Financial Advisor of the Hudson-based Wentz Financial Group .

"We've been fortunate," Wentz said Sunday, March 15, at Rhodes Arena after it was announced No. 12 seed Akron (29-5) would meet No. 5 seed Texas Tech (22-10) in an NCAA Tournament Midwest Region first-round game Friday, March 20, in Tampa.

"With the help of the collective, we've been able to maintain and retain the outstanding players that coach Groce and the staff have been able to bring in. The collective is integral to that because, obviously, the landscape of college basketball and college sports has changed to the point where if you don't have that component to where you can offer assistance financially to the players, it's hard to retain them."

According to the Fear the Roo Collective website , "The objective of our collective is to promote our athletes, support athletics and help the university grow! We aim to improve training and recovery, nutrition and conditioning, and expand our facilities. The collective provides a way for you to directly support what is most passionate to you!"

Wentz, 55, is a 1988 graduate of Marlington High School who attended the University of Akron . He is married with two children, and is a donor to UA's academic programs and athletic teams.

"We are very, very fortunate," Groce said. "NIL plays a part in this environment that we are in and we have had the Fear the Roo Collective since 2022. That impacts the retention [of players].

"... We have a culture. You hear that word all the time, right, with organizations and businesses, but we have one. It's a real thing. We're very peculiar about who we let in. So, it starts there and then you know we always say, 'You have to become us. We don't become you.' Guys kind of figure that out pretty quickly. They gotta fit in first and then once they do that they have an opportunity to stand out like you've seen some of these upperclassmen.

"I think that's part of it, and then I just have a great staff and support staff. Player development is very important to us, and I don't mean that just on the court. I mean that off the court, too. Academically, you know, we're just as proud that we've graduated every player that's exhausted their eligibility that's played in the nine years. Every guy. Some of them with multiple degrees. So, we're just as proud of that. We've got guys who've become pros. I think it's one player now in nine years who's been a scholarship player who finished with us that has not become a professional basketball player for at least one year or more."

Wentz, a Stow resident, became an Akron men's basketball season ticket holder in 2008 when Keith Dambrot was the team's coach and sat courtside opposite the opposing team's bench at Rhodes Arena.

Wentz now has courtside seats next to Akron's coaching staff at Rhodes Arena.

"I tell John this is the most fun I've ever had in my life doing this stuff," Wentz said. "It's been an absolute joy to me. We were going through this the other night — nine years and about 73 kids have run through the program in that period of time, and they're all like family. It's amazing.

"The interaction you get to see coming to practices, the stuff that's said coming off the floor and where they made mistakes, where they're happy – the interaction is a lot of fun. And then also the coaching staff, there could be a Netflix documentary on the humor that goes on sitting there."

How the Fear the Roo Collective started at the University of Akron

Wentz said the Fear the Roo Collective is "the first sports collective in the United States" and people can donate to any of the Akron athletics teams.

Wentz said the landscape of college athletics changed in 2020 when "the NCAA ruled that Northwestern football players could get paid for the EA Sports gaming.

"They filed a lawsuit to try to form a union because if they had a collective bargaining agreement then they could negotiate pay," Wentz said. "So, then they came back and said you don't need to do that. This is how it's gonna work.

"… They filed it in the state, then they filed it against the NCAA and it went all the way to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court ruled that collegiate athletes can accept money because the schools were using their name, their image and their likeness to return revenue and not sharing that."

Wentz was at his home in Georgia at the time.

"[Akron assistant] coach Dustin Ford and I have a conversation about it and I said, 'I think we need to get in front of this,'" Wentz said. "I said, 'We have got an unbelievable team that probably could have won an NCAA Tournament game in 2020.' The 2019-20 team, I said, 'There's key kids on that team that I want to bring back and we need to make sure these kids come back.' I said, 'We have an opportunity with this collective.'

"I remember coming back [to Ohio] when everybody started getting back out and coach Groce and I talked a little bit about it on the phone, and I said, 'Well, coach, I think we could do something financially from Wentz Financial Group as a sponsorship to help retain the kids,' and he's like, 'Yeah, I don't want to have any part of that.' And I said, 'Well, that's great you don't want to have any part of it, but you don't have a choice because you know as an outside business and the way that the rules are set up [we can move forward with this]."

Wentz said he first met Groce the day Akron hired him in 2017.

"We kind of mapped out a dream, a vision and a plan for this program long term, which we're on the cusp of doing," Wentz said. "We discuss everything and make sure we're doing all the things right. We were able to retain everybody we wanted to on that team."

Groce calls Akron's 2019-20 Mid-American Conference regular-season championship team that featured Loren Cristian Jackson, Tyler Cheese, Xeyrius Williams, Channel Banks and Deng Riak "the trailblazer group" that started this run of success.

Akron has made the short drive to Cleveland to win seven MAC Tournament championships, three with Dambrot (2009, 2011, 2013) and four with Groce (2022, 2024, 2025, 2026).

Since 2020, Akron's notable transfers out were Ali Ali to Butler in 2022 and Nate Johnson to Kansas State and James Okonkwo to Utah in 2025. Ali returned to Akron after a year away and teamed up with Enrique Freeman, Greg Tribble Jr., Sammy Hunter and Johnson to win the MAC Tournament title in 2024.

Akron has won the past five seasons with players it has developed, such as Freeman, Ali, Tribble, Mikal Dawson, Nate Johnson, Tavari Johnson, Amani Lyles, Sharron Young, Marvin Musiime-Kamali, Zach Halligan and Eric Mahaffey.

Akron has also won with Division I transfers, such as Jackson (Long Beach), Riak (East Carolina), Williams (Dayton), Okonkwo (North Carolina), Hunter (Mississippi), Xavier Castaneda (South Florida), Seth Wilson (West Virginia), Isaiah Gray (Cornell), Shammah Scott (Wichita State), Bowen Hardman (Ohio State) and Evan Mahaffey (Ohio State).

"We gotta give credit to Bud Wentz, the coaching staff and the support staff," Scott said after making the game-winning 3-pointer March 14 to beat Toledo 79-76 in the MAC Tournament final. "We have a great system around us to put us in this position. They recruit a lot of great guys who put in the work, and then also the guys before us, they laid the foundation for us to follow, and we are just building off of that. So, it's just a credit to the entire [group of people at] Akron.

"… It's a team effort. Coaches. I'm just beyond blessed. This is a great environment to play in and it's just honestly incredible. I'm just glad I get to share this moment with my best friends and the best coaches I have ever had. I will forever cherish these moments."

Scott, a 2020 Shaker Heights High School graduate, is in his third year at Akron after previously playing at Wichita State. He will finish his Akron career 9-0 in MAC Tournament games and 8-0 against Kent State.

"We take pride in our development," Lyles said. "Bud Wentz is a big part of that and so is our coaching staff. We are just never satisfied. Every year we look to improve. The older guys laid that foundation and it's our job to keep going just to make the standard higher and higher.

"… It's a winning culture. Just take the little aspects, because winning takes the little details. Obviously, it's a big picture when you win a championship, but just trying to really focus on what it takes to win championships and the small details and the everyday things that you do and the habits that you create as a player and a person. That's really the things that I try to focus in on because champions aren't made overnight. They're made in the summer."

Wentz praised Akron's coaches and players for being "elite" after winning a MAC-record third consecutive tournament title.

"The standard is high and it's a culture thing," Tavari Johnson said. "We learn from a lot of our older guys on how to develop and win, and it's something that we're trying to pass onto the younger guys now. It's just the culture. We've had so many people that have helped us and developed us throughout the years, and that has allowed us to get here.

"… When I came here freshman year I was really trying to learn as much as I can and get better. I had a great group when I was a freshman that were older than me. A lot of great players have played at Akron, so I really was just trying to soak up as much information as I can to get where we are now."
