The Chicago Bulls are making some moves within the organization, assigning Nic Claxton and Dailyn Swain to their G League affiliate, the Windy City Bulls.
The announcement gives both players an opportunity to get on the floor in Windy City, but the circumstances surrounding these assignments are a little different.
For Nic Claxton, this is an important step as he continues working his way back from a hamstring injury. Claxton has been sidelined and has yet to make his regular-season debut, so getting him back into a competitive basketball environment is an important part of his return.
And for Chicago, his availability could be a significant boost.
The Bulls have been looking for more consistency on the defensive end, particularly when it comes to protecting the paint and limiting second-chance opportunities. Claxton brings size, length and athleticism to the frontcourt, along with the ability to rebound and protect the rim.
Those are areas where Chicago could use some additional help, especially as the team works through its early-season challenges. Getting Claxton back into game shape and eventually working him into the rotation could give the Bulls another option defensively and provide some much-needed depth up front.
Then there's Dailyn Swain, whose assignment comes at a different point in his young career.
The 15th overall pick has had a relatively quiet start to his rookie campaign. Through his limited opportunities with Chicago, Swain has appeared in just two games, averaging 2.0 points while trying to find his place within the rotation.
And that's not necessarily an easy adjustment for a rookie, especially one coming into an NBA environment where playing time has to be earned.
Swain entered the league with plenty of potential, but the transition to the professional level takes time. The speed of the game, physicality and expectations are all adjustments, and sometimes the best way for a young player to work through that is by getting consistent minutes.
That's where Windy City comes in.
Rather than sitting on the bench and waiting for opportunities in Chicago, Swain now has a chance to get meaningful game experience and build confidence on the offensive end. It's also an opportunity to show the Bulls coaching staff what he can do with a bigger role and more time on the floor.
And for the organization, these assignments are part of the bigger picture. The G League gives NBA teams a chance to develop younger talent, get injured players back into game shape and/or evaluate how guys respond when given more responsibility.
So while Claxton is focused on getting back from injury, Swain is looking to find his rhythm and establish himself at the professional level.
Two different situations, but the same destination.
The key now will be watching how they make the most of their opportunities with Windy City and what it could mean for Chicago moving forward.
