This entire summer has been a rollercoaster for Jordan Hawkins as he tries to find his footing in the NBA. The former UConn Husky and NCAA national champion has been traded and cut in the same offseason.
Hawkins was a lottery pick by the New Orleans Pelicans , but in order for them to sign Bennedict Mathurin, they had to trade Hawkins.
"The New Orleans Pelicans have traded Jordan Hawkins, Micah Peavy, a future second-round draft pick and a future second-round pick swap to the Memphis Grizzlies for AJ Johnson and Taj Gibson. The trade, which was announced Tuesday, clears roster space for the Pelicans, frees up salary flexibility to sign Bennedict Mathurin to a two-year, $16 million deal," ESPN's Shams Charania wrote.
The former lottery pick didn't last long with the Memphis Grizzlies, as over the weekend, he was waived.
"The Memphis Grizzlies and guard Jordan Hawkins have agreed to part ways via waivers, allowing the 2023 lottery pick to find a new home in free agency, sources told ESPN's Shams Charania. The move comes three weeks after arriving as part of a four-player trade with the New Orleans Pelicans for AJ Johnson and Taj Gibson," ESPN wrote.
However, it didn't take him too much longer to find his next home, as he signed a two-way deal with the Chicago Bulls .
"The Chicago Bulls and Jordan Hawkins have agreed to a two-way deal, league sources told hoopshype. Hawkins reunites with Bulls executive Bryson Graham, who was a part of the front office with the New Orleans Pelicans when Hawkins was drafted 14th overall in the 2023 NBA Draft," HoopsHype's Michael Scotto posted.
This is a great opportunity for Hawkins, as he has a very good chance to turn that deal into an NBA contract. The former first-round pick can shoot the lights out, and that might be exactly what Chicago wants to use him for.
Hawkins knows what it is like to win and compete after being coached by Dan Hurley in college. He has that great mentality inside of him, so everything that has happened to him this summer is only going to be used as motivation.
