Buster Posey spent much of the 2026 season looking for reasons to believe the San Francisco Giants were moving in the right direction. Rookie Jonah Cox has finally given him one.
Posey praised Cox during an interview with the San Francisco Standard, describing the 25-year-old as an "absolute disrupter." He said Cox's presence creates anxiety for opposing pitchers, catchers and managers.
Those comments arrived after Cox showed exactly what Posey meant against the St. Louis Cardinals . His performance offered a potential blueprint for how the Giants want to play in 2027.

Cox went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, one RBI and one run during Wednesday's 6-5 victory . His speed directly created San Francisco's first run.
After reaching on a single in the third inning, Cox stole second and third. He then scored during an unusual double play, crossing the plate before Bryce Eldridge was tagged near second base.
Cox later delivered an RBI single in the seventh. The performance helped the Giants win their first road series in three months, according to McCovey Chronicles .
The box score showed three hits, but the larger value came from how Cox forced St. Louis to divide its attention every time he reached base.
"It just changes things for the pitcher," Posey told the Standard. "It changes things for the catcher; it changes things for the manager."
That is a useful skill for a team searching for ways to manufacture offense at Oracle Park. Cox gives the Giants an element their lineup lacked for long stretches.
Giants Reveal Major Step for Former Closer After Lost Season

Cox's emergence fits a broader philosophical change. The San Francisco Chronicle reported that the Giants stole only 27 bases during their first 85 games but recorded 42 over the following 62.
The personnel changed after the trade deadline, but so did the mindset. Cox and Grant McCray gave the lineup more speed, while the coaching staff encouraged players to take extra bases and create pressure.
Cox ranks in the top 1% of MLB players in sprint speed, according to the Chronicle. He also gives San Francisco defensive flexibility in center field and, when needed, at second base.
That combination gives him a legitimate path to the 2027 roster. It does not guarantee an everyday job, and the Giants have not announced a role for him next season.
Cox still must prove he can reach base consistently enough for his speed to matter. Opponents will also adjust after receiving a longer look at his offensive tendencies.
September cannot settle that question, but it can shape the competition. Every disruptive trip around the bases gives the front office another reason to reserve Cox a meaningful opportunity next spring.
The Giants lacked urgency during too many stretches this season. Cox changes the temperature of a game simply by reaching first base, and Posey may have found a player capable of helping establish a new identity.
