BYU Cougars head coach Kalani Sitake provided the first injury updates on LJ Martin and Isaiah Glasker. Both players exited the TCU game early with injuries and did not return to the game. They're both "doubtful" to play this week against Iowa State, according to Sitake.
"We're still evaluating," Sitake said. "We'll probably get more information. Right now it looks doubtful for both of them."
Without Martin, BYU's offense was missing an extra boost against the Horned Frogs defense. Bear Bachmeier took over in the clutch and helped pull out a win. This is another injury concern for Martin, who missed time last year. Bachmeier will need to be better in the passing game from here on out. He had 62 yards against TCU, which was only the second time in decades BYU won a game without a quarterback throwing for 100 yards.
Regardless of the way it happened, the Cougars got a win. If BYU intends on beating Iowa State on Friday, there will have to be a solid effort in the tune-up game for Notre Dame. We'll wait and see what Martin's status is before Friday. If he's out for the Iowa State contest, the hope is he'll be available for the top 10 matchup against the Fighting Irish.
If Martin is out, BYU will turn to Preston Rex and Journee Tonga. Either could make an impact. Tonga is a true freshman that joined the program right before the season, but had an outstanding Fall Camp. The Cougars could also run with Devaughn Eka, who has the potential to be good.
As for Isaiah Glasker, not having him will be a setback for the BYU defense. He was removed from BYU's depth chart for the week. Fortunately, the Cougars linebacker room is very good. Jake Clifton and Miles Hall will be there be the next man up. Kelly Poppinga's defense will be ready to go. Additionally, Siale Esera is expected to return, per Poppinga, during a media appearance.
At this point in the season, the injuries are starting to pile up for BYU, and it's at the worst time. At least five day one starters have missed time in four games. We'll get to see what this Cougars team is made of and if they're one of the best in the conference. They will be tested in a major way.
The Cougars welcome Iowa State into LaVell Edwards Stadium on Friday night (10:15 p.m. ET, ESPN). The short week provides and extra day for rest for Notre Dame on Oct. 17 ( 7:30 p.m. ET, ABC ).
