There's a new prodigy making headlines in the world of women's college basketball . Since her freshman year for the Vanderbilt Commodores, talented guard Mikayla Blakes has made an inevitable impact. During the 2024-25 season, she averaged 23.3 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game.
But it's the sophomore year where Blakes has put forward her best performance for the Commodores, while also reaching on the verge of accomplishing a rare feat by former college icon and current WNBA star of the Indiana Fever , Caitlin Clark .
In the most recent game for the Commodores, Blakes scored 34 points against the Tennessee Volunteers on Sunday. She was the biggest contributor in her team's 87-77 victory. After this game, Mikayla Blakes has managed to attain a staggering average of 27.10 points per game this season as a sophomore.
Interestingly, Blakes' average of 27.10 points has currently pushed her on the first position in the list of sophomores with the highest-ever average of points per game during a season in women's college basketball history.
Before Blakes, it was Caitlin Clark who had established the record of best point average for a sophomore during a season. Playing for the Iowa Hawkeyes during the 2021-22 period, she had scored 26.96 points per game.
Clark's Indiana Fever teammate Kelsey Mitchell is number three on the all-time list. During her sophomore season of 2015-16 for the Ohio State Buckeyes , she averaged 26.15 points per game.
Coming back to Blakes, she's now got a golden chance to cement her place on the top of this list permanently. After the end of regular season, there are still few games remaining for the Vanderbilt Commodores. They will play in the SEC Tournament next week, in Greenville.
If Blakes continues to score at a similar rate by the end, she will claim the title for best point average by a sophomore during a given season, leaving Clark behind's feat behind. Apart from her impressive 27.10 points per game, the Commodores guard is also averaging 3.8 rebounds and 4.6 assists this season.
