The Seattle Mariners took star catcher Cal Raleigh out of the starting lineup on Saturday, before dropping a game to the Kansas City Royals . He is dealing with general soreness , team manager Dan Wilson said to reporters.
“Raleigh had been slated to bat second and start behind the plate against the Royals, but the Mariners announced he would miss the game just over an hour before first pitch. The soreness did require imaging, according to Wilson, but Raleigh is “day-to-day,'” the Associated Press reported.
Raleigh is coming off a breakthrough 2025 season, that saw the catcher hit 60 home runs. He also drove in 125 runs for the Mariners, as the team was able to reach the ALCS. Seattle ended up losing that series to the Toronto Blue Jays .
Raleigh is coming off back-to-back seasons with at least 100 RBIs. He is the heart of Seattle’s offense, and the Mariners are relying on the catcher to blast a lot of homers this season.
This season though, Raleigh is off to a somewhat sluggish start . He has seven home runs and 18 RBIs in 33 games played. He is batting at just a .176 average.
“We’re kind of trying to be as cautious as possible,” Wilson said about scratching Raleigh from Saturday’s lineup, per MLB.com.
Wilson said his star catcher is still being assessed.
“Right now, it’s day to day,” Wilson said. “So again, once we get a little bit more information, we’ll have a little bit of a better idea.”
Seattle dropped to 16-18 overall on the season, after losing to the Royals Saturday in extra innings. Kansas City nipped Seattle, 3-2. Despite having a losing record, the Mariners are less than two games behind the Athletics for first in the American League West.
The Mariners and Royals play again Sunday. Following the win Saturday, Kansas City is now 14-19 on the year.
