- Caleb Wilson praises Hubert Davis after UNC destroys Notre Dame
With a Wednesday night return home to face Notre Dame , the North Carolina Tar Heels found themselves in desperate need of a victory.
Early on, UNC struggled to separate itself from a struggling Fighting Irish squad, leading by just one point at the first media timeout. North Carolina built a 9-point halftime lead, but needed more.
The Tar Heels roared out of their break, scoring 49 second-half points en route to a 91-69 victory they largely controlled from opening tip.
After UNC's win, star freshman power forward Caleb Wilson talked about his team's red-hot second half, honing in on how Hubert Davis is instrumental in preparation – and doesn't deserve the amount of criticism he gets.
"I think it (tonight) was definitely a conscious effort, but it's more like how it is now," Wilson said, via TarHeel247's Noah Weiskopf. "Our coach can say whatever he wants. I hate when people try to blame Hubert for our lapses. Our coach is teaching us to write things all about our effort – and us playing as hard as we can. Coach can only do so much, we're the ones out there playing. As long as we pick up, play with pride and play with a lot of effort, we'll get the result we got today."
Wilson played a major factor in North Carolina's win, leading all scorers with 22 points, while also adding seven rebounds, five assists, one steal, and block apiece. 11 different Tar Heels scored, with Henri Veesaar (15 points) and Derek Dixon (11) joining Wilson in double-figures.
Wilson's confidence in Davis is exactly what UNC needs, both this season and for future roster-building.
