All signs are pointing to the New York Giants acquiring a running back ahead of the Nov. 10 NFL trade deadline. But injuries may force general manager Joe Schoen to make a deal well ahead of the 4 p.m. ET deadline next Tuesday.
The Giants are reportedly interested in upgrading from starting running back Cam Skattebo but may also need to replace him, since he is battling a hamstring injury and did not practice Monday.
After placing Tyrone Tracy Jr. on injured reserve, the Giants only have one running back with an NFL carry (Devin Singletary) on their roster entering their Week 9 game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
The Giants acquired Greg Desrosiers from the Los Angeles Chargers practice squad and signed veteran Phil Mafeh to their practice squad, but neither has a carry in the NFL this season.
Giants Floated as a Landing Spot for Tony Pollard
It's hard to know what the Giants will do in John Harbaugh's first trade deadline as head coach, other than they are being aggressive .
While all eyes are on Jonathan Taylor , ESPN's Ben Solak predicted a reunion between Giants offensive assistant and quarterbacks coach Brian Callahan and veteran Tony Pollard, who is no stranger to the NFC East.
"Someone will soon break from the ranks and trade for Pollard, a steady, three-down back who has reminded the league of his characteristic energy after consecutive games of 100-plus rushing yards," Solak wrote Tuesday. "I vote for the Giants, as assistant coach Brian Callahan has familiarity with Pollard."
Pollard could certainly be had for a lower price than Taylor, since the Colts are trying to land at least one first-round pick for the 2021 NFL rushing champion, though Pollard is driving up his price tag with his recent play (65 carries for 322 yards, five touchdowns over Tennessee's past three games).
Cam Skattebo's Future Is in Doubt
Skattebo was riding a high going into the Giants' game in Philadelphia last season before his world got rocked by a devastating ankle injury.
Skattebo has been riding the roller coaster ever since. The starting running back has dealt with Harbaugh's discipline and his diminishing role, and after finally rebounding with a career-high 124 yards against Houston, his outlook turned bleak when he injured his leg in overtime on the penultimate play of the game.
Harbaugh addressed Skattebo's injury Monday, after he did side work with Giants athletic trainers. The prognosis was uncertain.
"It's going to be probably day-to-day up to the game," Harbaugh said. "We're going to just have to see where we're at. I'll probably have more information toward the end of the week."
Skattebo is surely fighting to get back on the field, but a muscle pull is tough for a player whose legs are his game. With the Giants linked to every running back available, and trade deadline less than 48 hours after the Eagles game, Skattebo may be a backup in his next game.
