Nobody expected Cam Ward to trade blows with Joe Burrow, and for most of Sunday the Tennessee Titans quarterback did exactly that. Playing without top receiver Carnell Tate in the first game since the Jeffery Simmons trade, Ward went 26 of 40 for 304 yards and two touchdown passes with no interceptions in a 43-36 overtime loss to the Bengals. That is the first 300-yard game of his career, and it came days after talk of a QB reset in 2027 started to grow louder.
"He looked awesome today," Titans coach Robert Saleh said, per the team's website .
Ward's best day came with help

Ward spread the ball to Gunnar Helm (five catches, 76 yards), Chimere Dike (five for 71 and a touchdown) and Wan'Dale Robinson, whose 15-yard score and the two-point conversion after it put Tennessee up 36-29 with 3:46 left. Tony Pollard kept the offense on schedule with 117 rushing yards, and the defense handed Ward extra chances. Amani Hooker intercepted Burrow three times, the first three-pick game by a Titan since Kevin Byard in 2017, and Jacob Martin had three sacks, three tackles for loss and six pressures while surging in the stock report . Anthony Hill Jr. led everyone with 14 tackles.
Then the final two drives went Cincinnati's way. Dexter Lawrence II sacked Ward for 13 yards in field goal range at the end of regulation, and Ward's fourth-and-3 throw in overtime fell incomplete. "But at the end of the day we are trying to win games here," Ward said after the loss . Whether he is clutch enough is a fair question for a 1-7 team.
The season sample still needs work

One game does not erase seven. Ward had not topped 222 passing yards in 2026 before Sunday, and he is at 1,483 yards with six touchdown passes and five interceptions, a 78.7 passer rating and a QBR that ranks 25th in the league . PFF graded him at 85.6 for Sunday's game, the best mark on the Titans' offense, which shows how far the rest of his season has lagged. With a bounty of 2027 picks from the Simmons deal, Tennessee fans in Nashville can reasonably want more than one big afternoon before calling him the answer. The case got stronger in Cincinnati. It is not closed, and the nine games after the bye will decide where the Titans pick and what they do with it.
