Cam Whitmore 's basketball journey has been defined by promise interrupted.
The 22-year-old forward was selected 20th overall by the Rockets in 2023 out of Villanova. He arrived in Denver this fall on a two-way contract, looking for stability after a turbulent few seasons and a serious health scare.
Whitmore was once viewed as a high-upside athlete with elite explosiveness. Instead, he's spent his young career bouncing between teams and battling for minutes — before a life-threatening blood clot forced him to confront the fragility of his NBA dream.
Now with the Nuggets, he is hoping this latest stop finally offers the fresh start and opportunity he has been chasing.
Whitmore showed explosive athleticism and scoring ability early.
In his rookie year with Houston (2023-24), he averaged 12.3 points and 3.8 rebounds in 18.7 minutes across 47 games while shooting 35.9% from three. His second season saw those numbers dip to 9.4 points and 3.0 rebounds in 16.2 minutes over 51 games. Traded to Washington before the 2025-26 season, he appeared in 21 games. He averaged 9.2 points and 2.8 rebounds in 16.9 minutes.
Then everything stopped.
In December 2025, doctors diagnosed him with upper-extremity deep vein thrombosis (a blood clot) in his right shoulder. Shoulder soreness during a Dec. 20 shootaround, marked by a series of airballs, led to the discovery. The condition, caused in part by his ribs restricting blood flow to the arm, ended his season and forced him to spend the holidays in a Washington hospital.
Family members took turns visiting as Whitmore processed a diagnosis that threatened more than just playing time. Deep vein thrombosis can become life-threatening if a clot travels to the lungs. Other NBA players, including Victor Wembanyama, Damian Lillard , and Ausar Thompson , have returned successfully after similar diagnoses, offering some reassurance.
After the diagnosis, Whitmore's NBA path grew even more uncertain.
He was included in the multi-team deal that sent Peyton Watson to Cleveland. The Cavaliers then waived him. By late summer 2026, he was a free agent searching for a landing spot.
The Nuggets signed him to a two-way contract in mid-September. Two-way deals limit players to 50 regular-season games. They're also ineligible for the playoffs unless converted to a standard contract. Denver has kept its 15th standard roster spot open while evaluating whether Whitmore can earn it.
He stood out on the first day of training camp alongside Aaron Gordon . His burst and physicality immediately caught the coaching staff's attention.
In preseason action, he scored 14 points in just 15 minutes against the Utah Jazz, converting 6-of-7 free throws by consistently attacking closeouts and drawing contact. He followed that up with a stronger outing against the Los Angeles Clippers, finishing with 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting, four rebounds, and a steal in 24 minutes.
What stands out most is the package Whitmore offers. He brings instant rim pressure and the ability to finish above the rim in transition or in half-court isolation. He is comfortable putting the ball on the floor and generating offense when the primary creators are on the bench. His ability to get to the line gives the Nuggets a source of easy points their second unit has lacked.
Nuggets coach David Adelman has expressed optimism about the fit. "I think there is new life for him," Adelman said. The coaching staff values Whitmore's ability to attack the rim and create offense with the ball in his hands, traits that can complement more system-oriented players around Nikola Jokić .
At the same time, they view Whitmore as a developmental project. The hope is to refine his decision-making, improve his defensive consistency, and expand his off-ball game. The goal is a versatile two-way role player, not just a scorer.
For Whitmore, success in 2026-27 starts with health and opportunity.
If he stays available and continues producing in limited minutes, Denver could convert his contract later in the season, especially if wing depth is tested by injury ( Julian Strawther is already sidelined six weeks with a knee sprain). Career averages of 10.5 points and 3.3 rebounds on 45% shooting in 17.3 minutes show the baseline talent is there.
At 6-foot-6 and 230 pounds with elite athleticism, Whitmore still possesses the tools that made him a first-round pick. Denver offers a low-pressure environment around established stars Nikola Jokić and Jamal Murray , plus a coaching staff willing to be patient.
For a player who has bounced from Houston to Washington to Cleveland and now Denver in a short career, this two-way deal represents more than just another roster spot.
It is a genuine second chance—one that began with surviving a life-threatening blood clot and now hinges on proving he belongs in the NBA for the long term.
