- Campbell: Howard to miss 'extended period' of time
Penn State's leading receiver, Koby Howard, will be out for an "extended period of time," coach Matt Campbell said Wednesday.
Howard, a sophomore receiver from Florida, was injured in the first half of Saturday's win over Temple. On Tuesday, Campbell said coaches would know more about Howard's availability for the Big Ten opener against Wisconsin by the end of the week.
That message changed Wednesday.
"After kind of evaluating everything, he's going to be out for probably an extended period of time. It's not season-ending, but it will be an extended period of time," Campbell said. "Obviously disappointing for Koby, but he's handled it really well, and I think the best interest of him going forward is making sure we do right by him and certainly our football team."
Howard had more than 100 yards receiving in two of Penn State's three games this season. He had 135 combined yards with a rushing and receiving score against the Owls.
Through three games, he led the Nittany Lions with 12 catches for 344 yards, along with receiving scores against Marshall and Temple. His 28.7 yards per catch this year ranks third nationally.
Howard also had a 20-yard TD run against Temple, the play he was injured.
"The disappointing part of it for him is just knowing how hard he's worked," Campbell said. "The reality is, he'll work just as hard to get back and better than ever."
