Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell provided several notable injury updates following the second day of training camp, while also praising a few players for their offseason work and development.
One of the biggest updates involved offensive tackle Giovanni Manu , who was recently placed on the Non-Football Injury (NFI) list.

Campbell revealed that Manu had been dealing with an undisclosed injury throughout the summer. After coming off the practice field on Wednesday, the injury was evaluated further, ultimately leading to his placement on the NFI list.
Campbell would go on to say he doesn't know the exact recovery timetable but estimated it could be around 12 to 14 weeks. Based on Campbell's tone during the press conference, it was clear the news was disappointing for both the coaching staff and the young offensive lineman.
Campbell also offered an encouraging update on tight end Sam LaPorta , who continues to work his way back from offseason back surgery.
The Lions have closely monitored LaPorta throughout his recovery and are pleased with the progress he has made.

Campbell emphasized that LaPorta remains a major part of Detroit's offense and explained that the coaching staff has intentionally been cautious with his return.
"Sometimes you've got to protect the player from themselves," Campbell said, hinting that LaPorta may have wanted to return to the field sooner than the team was comfortable allowing.
Campbell added that he's encouraged by how well LaPorta is moving and is excited to see him once the Lions begin practicing in pads. For now, the plan is to ease him back into football activities rather than rush the process.
Another player who drew significant praise from Campbell was second year and former first round defensive tackle Tyleik Williams .

Williams has transformed his body since being drafted, reportedly losing nearly 50 pounds during the offseason. Campbell said the rookie crushed Detroit's conditioning test and checked in around 325 pounds during his physical.
The Lions coach praised Williams for following through on a promise he made shortly after arriving in Detroit.
"He's a man of his word," Campbell said. "He said he would not let weight become an issue."
Campbell credited both Williams and the team's nutrition staff for the impressive transformation, explaining that the rookie arrived at the facility two weeks before offseason workouts began to continue working toward his goal.

When asked whether Williams' improved conditioning could lead to a different role along the defensive line, Campbell said the Lions are open to anything.
Campbell also highlighted the progress of cornerback Nick Whiteside , who joined the organization midway through last season.
"He has improved," Campbell said, describing Whiteside as someone who is "all about business."
Campbell added that Whiteside has approached training camp with urgency, saying, "He looks like he wants a spot and he wants a job."
As injuries continue to shape early training camp, Campbell's updates provided optimism surrounding LaPorta's recovery, excitement over Williams' development, and confidence that younger players like Whiteside are making the most of their opportunities.
