The Edmonton Oilers wanted to get a head start on considering a new coach after getting eliminated from the Stanley Cup playoffs in the first round.
But their division rival is blocking them from one potential candidate.
The Oilers wanted permission from Vegas to interview Bruce Cassidy , but the Golden Knights withheld it, NHL insider Frank Seravalli reported .
Cassidy was fired by Vegas with eight games left in the regular season . He had one year left on his contract, so the Golden Knights can decide whether to deny or grant permission to teams looking to interview him.
John Tortorella took over for the fired Cassidy. The Golden Knights are tied 2-2 in their second-round series against the Anaheim Ducks going into Game 5 on Tuesday night.
Cassidy joined the Golden Knights in 2022 and led them to the Stanley Cup win in his first year after he was fired by the Bruins .
Kris Knoblauch has been the Oilers coach since 2023. He signed a three-year extension last season after leading Edmonton to two consecutive Stanley Cup Finals. But after a first-round exit, Seravalli reports the Oilers are contemplating significant changes to their coaching staff.
Cassidy will likely be a hot commodity this summer with teams needing a new coach. The Toronto Maple Leafs and the Los Angeles Kings could be options for the 60-year-old.
