The Montreal Canadiens defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-1 on Thursday, moving ahead of them in the Atlantic Division standings. Cole Caufield scored his 50th goal to help the Habs. After the game, Caufield revealed his immediate reaction to the goal and what he accomplished, according to NHL.com.
"It was cool to have my dad in the building, and see his reaction was pretty special, and it means a lot. But it's obviously a huge win for us, and I think that one that I will always remember," Caufield told NHL.com
The goal came in the first period, as Caufield broke free on a penalty kill and put the puck past Andrei Vasilevskiy . It was not that long ago that Caufield hit 40 goals , and he has been working to this point ever since. With the goal, Caufield became the first Hab's player to score 50 goals in a season since Stephanie Richer accomplished the feat in the 1989-90 season, according to David Pagnotta.
It was the 29th goal in 31 games for Caufield, who has broken through the glass ceiling with a career season. Thanks to Caufield and Nick Suzuki , the Habs are in a playoff spot and still have a chance to win the division. Despite the accomplishment, Caufield had not scored a goal in three games.
"I'm not going to lie, I was pretty stressed out the past couple of days. It was three games, and it felt like forever, but I'm just glad it's kind of over with now, and we can get back to work," Caufield added.
The Canadiens will have a day off before welcoming the Columbus Blue Jackets into town, before ending their regular season with road games against the New York Islanders and Philadelphia Flyers .
