Montreal Canadiens starting goaltender Jakub Dobes is stealing the hearts of their fans during his run in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and for better or worse, could be becoming public enemy number one for fanbases around the league. Dobes is anything but a typical quiet goaltender who goes about his business, as he isn’t afraid to stir it up with players around his crease, gives interesting soundbites in the media, and his celebrations and antics in the net are starting to get plenty of attention.
Dobes added to his growing legacy with the media in Montreal after his 26-save victory over the Buffalo Sabres in Game 3, explaining how he stays grounded , according to NHL.com’s Mike Zeisberger.
“I’m not a hero,” Dobes replied with the innocence of a 24-year-old rookie who didn’t become Montreal’s No. 1 goalie until January. “I’m just me. I’m just a goofy goalie who tries to stop pucks. Trust me, I don’t call myself a hero. I pretty much will go home, eat, watch Game of Thrones, and go to bed. I don’t think that’s anything heroic. And when it’s time to do my job, I will do anything to win and make this franchise, these fans happy, and hopefully will win on Tuesday.”
The Canadiens have an outstanding goalie in Jacob Fowler backing up Dobes, who is considered the team’s future in the crease. However, with the way Dobes is playing , he might be making a case for himself as the future, and could leave the Canadiens with a tough decision if the run continues.
