The Montreal Canadiens faced the Dallas Stars on Thursday night, looking to establish the first four-game winning streak of the season. Surprisingly, they're in the midst of their best stretch of games without captain Nick Suzuki, who succumbed to injury for the first time of his impressively healthy career.
Head coach Martin St-Louis opted to give Jakub Dobes the start, instead of Jacob Fowler, a decision that raised a few eyebrows given Fowler's excellent play this season. The Canadiens have no choice but to solve their goalie conundrum , especially since Samuel Montembeault is nearing a return to play, but for the time being, it would be advantageous to have more than just one hot goalie available.
St-Louis also decided to shake things up among his skaters, placing Newfoundlander Alex Newhook on the first line alongside Juraj Slafkovsky and Cole Caufield. The choice to promote Newhook immediately paid off, leading to an entertaining 5-2 win for the Canadiens.
Let's dive into the instant recap highlights!
The Usual Suspect
Keyser Scörze wasted no time making his mark, giving the Canadiens a 1-0 lead after a lucky bounce led to a great scoring chance. With the goal, Caufield officially established a 50+ scoring pace, yet another encouraging sign for one of the best natural goal scorers in the NHL.

I'se the B'y
I have a working theory that all hockey teams are much better off with a Newfoundlander in the mix. Full disclosure: it's just an extension of my real-world theory that Newfoundlanders make everything better.
The Canadiens certainly agreed on Thursday night, as Newhook enjoyed one of the best games of his career, proving St-Louis' decision to promote him to the first line a wise one.
All things considered, it was no Ordinary Day , as Newhook perfectly epitomized the Jolly Roving Tar . In many ways, due to his silky-smooth skating, you could describe Newhook as the classic Rover .
His first goal came after what can only be depicted as an excellent shift by Noah Dobson . Not only did he break up an odd-man rush with an active stick, he also delivered a perfect pass to the speedy Newhook, who used his momentum to score a great goal while living a Consequence Free outing.
What a shift by Noah Dobson!First he breaks up the 2v1, then he feeds Newhook with a perfect pass.Newhook makes no mistake, immediately scoring upon his promotion to the first line.2-1 #GoHabsGO https://t.co/p0wFhV0qTN

Not to be outdone, Caufield quickly followed up with his second goal of the night, via a smart passing play by Slafkovsky, as well as a smart pinch by rookie defenceman Adam Engstrom.
Cole Caufield continues his excellent play!He takes advantage of an Adam Engstrom shot that hit the post to score his second goal of the game.3-1 #GoHabsGo https://t.co/z8gH9g8xnT

Newhook's second goal was not particularly pretty, especially if you compare it to the picturesque Seagull scenery in Newfoundland, but much like a Great Big Sea concert , it was a lot of fun.
It was just Newhook's third goal of the year, another reminder that usage tends to be one of the most important factors when it comes to NHL production. Caufield and Slafkovsky are a much better match for Newhook in the chemistry department.
It's also important to remember that Newhook doesn't want your maggoty fish. They're no good in winter. He can buy as good as that, down in Bonavista .
Additionally , Mari-Mac's mother's makin' Mari-Mac marry me, and my mother's makin' me marry Mari-Mac, well I'm gonna marry Mari for me Mari's takin' care o' me, and we'll all be feelin' marry when I marry Mari-Mac .
Okay.
Admittedly, that last one was a little forced.
I blame the Old Black Rum , though we can never discount Jakey's Gin , especially on The Night That Patty Murphy Died .

Up – Turn – Play
The Canadiens got into penalty trouble, a recurring theme this season, but they played well enough to close out a road game without their best player, against a strong opponent.
In the long Run Runaway , that's really all that matters.
Dobes stopped 17 of the 19 shots sent his way to secure his second win of the year, making it a perfect opportunity to celebrate by Donkey Riding .
Two BIG saves for #GoHabsGo netminder Jakub Dobes on the penalty kill. https://t.co/glfVVxVTmw
