With the deadline to submit qualifying offers to RFAs being at 5:00 PM this afternoon, it's hardly surprising that Montreal Canadiens ' GM Kent Hughes pulled the trigger on a minor trade involving pending RFA Joshua Roy .
The former fifth-round pick at the 2021 draft had been able to earn a spot in the Canadiens lineup despite having been given multiple opportunities. In 2023-24, he played 23 games with the big club, totalling 9 points. Then, in 2024-25, he played 12 games and gathered just two points. This year he skated in just three NHL games and was held off the scoresheet. He did perform well in the AHL, however, putting up 45 points in 57 games, making him fourth in scoring with the Laval Rocket.
In return, the Canadiens land left-shot blueliner Maksymilian Szuber , who'll add some size to the lineup in Laval at 6-foot-3 and 215 pounds. The former 6th-round pick by the defunct Arizona Coyotes and now Utah Mammoth at the 2022 draft spent the entirety of the last season in the AHL with the Tucson Roadrunners. In 65 games, he put up 27 points and was assessed 67 penalty minutes. Interestingly, he led all of Tucson's blueliners with 11 goals.
The 23-year-old is a pending RFA, like Roy; his qualifying offer stands at $850,000, and he has arbitration rights. Since Hughes went out of his way to acquire him, it would be surprising if he didn't get an offer. With a few hours left until the 5:00 PM deadline, it will be interesting to see if Hughes moves any other RFAs. The Habs' list includes Kirby Dach , Joe Veleno , Zachary Bolduc , Arber Xhekaj , Sean Farrell , Brett Berard , Jared Davidson, Jake Chiasson, Hunter McCown and Gannon Laroque. Watch this space for an update as the deadline nears.
