While it came in a loss, St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Jordan Walker continued his scorching start to the season on Monday. Now, he has joined an elite list of franchise legends.
Walker mashed his eighth home run of the season against the Cleveland Guardians . He matched the efforts of Stan Musial (1954), Mark McGwire (1998) and Scott Rolen (2004) through their first six games of their respective seasons. Only Albert Pujols (2006) had more home runs with 11, via Sarah Langs of MLB.com.
When Walker found out about his accomplishment, he was beaming with excitement. He fully acknowledged what it means to be alongside so many Cardinals greats, via the Associated Press.
"It means a lot, man," Walker said. "I mean, those are the greats. So, you learn about those guys early on, as soon as you come into the Cardinals organization. So, you know, to be put with them is pretty special."
Through his first 16 games of the season, Walker is hitting .333 with a league-leading eight home runs and 15 RBIs. The outfielder has shown flashes of brilliance throughout his career and was once a top prospect. However, his MLB career hadn't taken off the way the Cardinals hoped for. He was even demoted in 2024 for struggling to stay afloat.
But at least early in 2026, Walker has changed his narrative. While St. Louis may be rebuilding, the outfielder is proving that he should be a core piece of their long-term plans. Of course, Walker will need to continue his success over a full 162-game season. But being on a list with some of the best players in Cardinals history is certainly a strong start.
