The St. Louis Cardinals suffered a brutal blow to their lineup last October , with Lars Nootbar undergoing surgery to correct Haglund's deformities in both his heels. The Cardinals placed him on the 60-day injured list at the start of the season, making him eligible to return on May 24. It looks like he is right on schedule , according to Jeff Jones via X, formerly Twitter.
" Lars Nootbaar will start a rehab assignment the week beginning May 10, Marmol said today. So, assume in a lineup somewhere in the system on Tuesday, May 12. Cardinals will have 20 days from then to activate him assuming no setbacks, which puts his return ~June 1," Jones reported.
St. Louis has been playing well this season, and adding a healthy Nootbar to the lineup will only improve their chances in a competitive National League Central. The Cardinals made it clear they can play with some of the majors' best teams, as they dominated the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 1 of the series on Friday night.
They are currently on a five-game winning streak and sit in third in the NL Central with a 19-13 record. Nootbar didn't have a great showing during the 2025 season, with his strikeouts increasing exponentially and his average dropping, but a lingering injury, like bad heels, could have had an effect on his focus at the plate.
Nootbar does have some good on-base qualities, which the Cardinals will welcome near the top of the lineup, while he also plays above-average defense at the corner outfield spots.
