In 1998, Dennis Rodman made headlines after his whirlwind romance with Carmen Electra became public. Their brief relationship resulted in a Las Vegas wedding, an annulment nine days later and a divorce after around five months.
The model has not exactly admitted to feeling remorseful about her affair with Rodman. However, she has expressed regret about how quickly things went between them, though there was a reason for her impulsiveness at the time. If only she knew the financial consequences of her actions, though, maybe she wouldn't have pushed through with tying the knot with the five-time NBA champion.
Electra shared her experience in a recent appearance on the "Legally Goff" podcast.
"It started to get crazy," she said about her brief marriage to Dennis . "All these rumors were going around that I married him for the money because we hadn't signed a pre-nup. I didn't know about a pre-nup; I didn't know anything about it. I probably should have had him sign a pre-nup, as a matter of fact, because I have more money than he does right now. Imagine if we would have stayed married."
Clearing the air
Considering that some may have viewed Electra as something of a gold digger due to her decision to marry Rodman, it's understandable if she wanted to clear her name.
Per the pop culture icon, she had already been living comfortably before her relationship with Rodman began, noting that she owned a condominium unit, drove a Mercedes-Benz, and generally had her "life together" at that point. It wouldn't have been that surprising if that were true. After all, Electra became a fixture in Playboy in 1996 and was featured in a starring role on Baywatch in 1997.
So, why did she get married to one of the NBA's most eccentric figures only to split up not long after? The emotional toll of losing her mother to brain cancer in August 1998 and then her sister to a heart attack only two months later had Electra throwing caution to the wind. She also didn't have the benefit of hindsight. Had she known that Rodman would not take the marriage seriously and cheat on her, she likely would have rejected his unexpected wedding proposal .
The Ohio native clarified, though, that she didn't ask for anything during the divorce, even though she could have "taken that guy to the bank."
Dodging a bullet
Electra is probably thanking her lucky stars that she didn't have to endure being with Rodman for much longer. Despite earning around $27 million over his 14 seasons in the Association, the two-time Defensive Player of the Year went bankrupt due to poor financial decisions, his lavish lifestyle, and a bit of misfortune with some folks who didn't have his best interests at heart.
On the other hand, maybe staying with Electra would have inspired Rodman to get his act together. But then again, that would have been a tall task for her, especially since he had gained notoriety for his larger-than-life personality and propensity for getting in trouble.
For now, "The Worm" is in a much better place than where he was many years ago. It has been a while since we've heard of him getting in some sort of trouble. How long that lasts, though, remains to be seen.
