PITTSBURGH —The fate of the Pittsburgh Steelers ' season hung in the balance — and then sliced outside the right upright. Maybe you can call Tyler Loop 's field goal miss, "The Catholic Crosswind."
Before the Steelers' 26-24 win , a priest blessed the same end zone that the Baltimore Ravens ' kicker misfired over with Holy Water.
"Just, fuck, hopefully he misses. God is good, man, God is good," Steelers outside linebacker Nick Herbig said afterward about what was going through his head before the 44-yard try.
"I'm not gonna ask questions," mainstay defensive lineman Cam Heyward said, laughing. "The good Lord made a good decision tonight. I'm thankful, and we keep moving on."
Heyward was on the kick block team and turned around after Loop's boot to try to track it.
"I got my head around and I saw it, and I was like, 'Damn, he missed it,'" Heyward said. "I remember, it was early on in (my) career, (Justin) Tucker hit one to win the game and it kinda ended our season, so we were due to give them one back."
Receiver Calvin Austin III was on the sideline, turned away and waiting to hear — not see — what happened.
"I turned around and just looked at the crowd," Austin said. "The crowd got crazy, so I knew. The crowd was hype the whole game, so I knew they (were) gonna miss."
Fellow wideout Adam Thielen , who acknowledges he's nearing the end of his career, said he thought about if he'd played his final snap as Loop lined it up.
Thielen said he doesn't watch such field goals when his team is kicking them. He likes seeing the other side miss, though.
Herbig chalked the crazy finish up to what the rivalry enbodies.
"Classic Steelers/Ravens game, man," Herbig said. "That's what it is, it's always been like that, it'll always be like that. Just thank the Lord, bless the Lord that we were able to come out on top. We're not done yet. We got a lot to look forward to. We're ready to go on a run."
