- Ceiling, floor, expectations: Ron Harper Jr. with the Boston Celtics in 2026-27
As each day of the 2026 NBA offseason passes, we inch closer to the start of the 2026-27 regular season for the Boston Celtics . And as Opening Night draws nearer, the outline of the roster that will take the floor for Game 1 of 82 is starting to come into focus as well.
After Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens traded star forward Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers , it became clear that this is a critical season for the team's current contention arc, with the team being remade to maximize the rest of the team's sole superstar, Jayson Tatum . What is the ceiling, floor, and our expectation for each of the players currently under contract with Boston given this sea change in structure for the team?

To such an end, Daniel Donabedian and Justin Quinn of the Celtics Wire took a player-by-player deep dive into the answers for these questions. So let's dive into our assessment for Ron Harper Jr. for this edition of our player projections for the campaign soon to arrive.

JQ: I cannot emphasize enough that anyone able to bother Kevin Durant defensively for the bulk of their time on the court (even an older version of the Slim Reaper) has a future in the league on that side of the ball. But Harper Jr. has a solid if inconsistent shot from beyond the arc to go with a full repertoire of scoring tools that might cement him as much as a major rotation role by the end of the season.

His offensive consistency is the next hurdle to becoming a player that exceeds the value of his team-friendly contract. But it is not hard to seeing the path for Harper actually getting to a realistic ceiling with the Celtics this season.

DD: Harper Jr. is a prime example of the perseverance it takes to make it in the NBA. The 26-year-old went undrafted in 2022, got cut multiple times, and was even overlooked by the Celtics at one point. However, last season there was more room on the roster with Jayson Tatum injured, giving Harper a window of opportunity.
The New Jersey native made the most of his shot, as he entered 29 regular-season games (he had played just 11 over the prior three seasons) and even started Game 7 of the first round of the 2026 NBA Playoffs. His 3-pointer is improving, his defense solid, and nobody can question his hunger. Harper does have lots of competition for playing time because of all the wings on Boston's roster, but the Celtics clearly trust him given the extension he signed this offseason. It's not unreasonable to think he'll earn a bump in minutes and be a consistent part of the rotation.

Floor
JQ: There is SO much competition among Boston's reserve wings, and a rough early start could easily see the New Jersey native ending up buried on the bench as players like Baylor Scheierman , Hugo González , and Jordan Walsh end up soaking up all the minutes.
That might not be so bad for his developmental future as he'll still be able to play minutes with the Maine Celtics. But it wouldn't be against the sort of competition that would most hone Harper's skills for the season ahead.

DD: Harper failing to hit his ceiling this season could simply be caused by those around him thriving. If Hugo González shines in his sophomore year, or Baylor Scheierman lights it up from deep, Harper could get jumped in the rotation through no real fault of his own.

Of course, if Harper's shot declines or he fails to crash the boards properly on a possession, for example, that'll do him no favors in terms of playing time. His current contract includes some fully-guaranteed money though, and he couldn't even be traded until January 2027. The fourth-year NBAer will most likely be with the C's for at least the next season or two barring an unexpected trade.
Expectation
JQ: I think it will be hard for Harper to separate himself from that abundance of wing players, but I think he'll earn a role off the bench that will shrink or grow depending on the health of several teammates. His outside shot might make the issue of whether to play Harper a necessity if he can continue connecting at the same rate consistently.
But so long as his defense stays engaged and his overall scoring consistent, we should see Harper graduate to something like 10-15 minutes a night by the end of the season.

DD: When looking at Boston's plethora of young wings, I'm probably second-highest on Harper Jr. (and highest on Scheierman) for next season. He has the experience that González may lack at times and is a better shooter than Jordan Walsh.

His defense is good enough to keep him on the floor, too, so I see him being the second or third wing off the bench for the Celtics. He could even start a few games. Regardless of when he checks in, I expect at least 40 regular-season games logged for Harper during the 2026-27 campaign.
