The players of the Boston Celtics were probably equally shocked after the team traded Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday in a blockbuster trade that no one saw coming.
In exchange, the Celtics received Paul George , two first-round picks, and two second-round picks. It put an end to Brown's stellar run in Boston, which drafted him at No. 3 in 2016. He helped the Celtics capture their 18th championship in 2024, winning as Finals MVP in the process.
His acrimonious exit in Boston was unfortunate , especially for those who witnessed Brown's growth from a wide-eyed rookie into an elite player. But such is the life in the NBA.
Derrick White penned a heartfelt message for his now-former teammate ahead of his fresh start in Philadelphia .
"Nothing but love for you, JB! 🍀," wrote White on X.
"Thank you for everything you gave to the city of Boston and this franchise! Wishing you nothing but success in the next chapter of your career! 🫡"
White and Brown formed a strong bond during their five years together on the Celtics, especially this season, as they carried the team to the second seed in the Eastern Conference with Jayson Tatum out for the majority of the campaign due to an Achilles injury.
The 31-year-old White and the 29-year-old Brown were a perfect combination with their two-way ability, competitiveness, and unselfishness. Both were silent workers, imbued with a no-frills approach to the game.
While the Celtics and the 76ers have a heated rivalry, White and Brown will always have deep respect for each other.
