Jaylen Brown will miss Tuesday’s game against the Phoenix Suns due to a right knee contusion. The Celtics star was originally listed as questionable for the matchup at Mortgage Matchup Center on Tuesday night but was downgraded about seven hours before tipoff. All other Celtics players will be available besides Jayson Tatum (Achilles tear).
Tuesday’s game will mark just the sixth game Brown has missed this season amid a career year. He’s averaging 29.2 points, 7.0 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game and scored a team-high 32 points in 36 minutes during Sunday’s blowout win over the Lakers .
The Celtics will be playing a tough back-to-back against the Nuggets on Wednesday night in Denver , so it’s understandable that Brown would get the night off against a shorthanded Suns squad on Tuesday if he wasn’t cleared for both contests. Phoenix will be missing at least three key rotation players due to injury ( Devin Booker , Dillon Brooks , Jordan Goodwin ) on Tuesday night, with Grayson Allen (knee) also being questionable.
Without Brown available, Joe Mazzulla will have a number of options available to try to replace his star’s minutes and production. Wings Jordan Walsh , Ron Harper Jr. and Hugo Gonzalez should be in line for a minutes boost off the bench with the possibility that one could be inserted in the starting five in Brown’s place.
Mazzulla could opt to go with a double big lineup as well and insert Luka Garza back in the rotation alongside Neemias Queta and Nikola Vucevic . Payton Pritchard could also be added back into the starting five in Brown’s place, but that seems unlikely since the Celtics still need a primary ballhandler with the second unit, and their only other option there is 10-day contract addition Dalano Banton .
The Celtics will go for their fourth straight win without Brown in Phoenix at 9 p.m. on Tuesday night.
