On Tuesday night at TD Garden, the Boston Celtics welcome the Brooklyn Nets, with the stakes exceeding a mere regular season victory. Yet the Celtics face their own hurdle as they navigate the first back-to-back of the season.
Derrick White is listed as probable with right hip synovitis, marking the first time he has appeared on the report this season. The team also confirmed Devin Carter is out with an illness. While Jayson Tatum, Paul George, and Mitchell Robinson are available, their minutes on Monday against the Bulls were carefully managed. George played 25 minutes and Robinson just 16. The coaching staff clearly wants to protect them, but the Nets' poor performance might force a different hand.

White's Hip Status Defines The Rotation
Derrick White has started all three games this season alongside Jordan Walsh, Tatum, George, and Robinson. His absence would force a significant shuffle in the backcourt. The term synovitis refers to swelling in the membrane that lines joints like the hip. The Colorado Center of Orthopaedic Excellence states this condition triggers inflammation that restricts movement. White played 18 minutes Monday before the issue appeared on the report. If he sits, Payton Pritchard steps in, a move that changes the defensive speed Boston relies on.
Joe Mazzulla addressed the situation with a clear message about trust. He said, "We trust the sports science team that we have, we trust the competition of those guys." However, the team has 16 back-to-backs scheduled this year. The decision on Tuesday sets a precedent for how they manage their veterans throughout the long season.
Nets Desperation Makes This A Trap Game
Boston cannot afford to look past a winless opponent. Visibly upset, head coach Jordi Fernandez saw the Nets suffer an embarrassing defeat against the Pacers. He stated, "The performance we put up after the first quarter was just unacceptable." Fernandez also noted that allowing 112 points in three quarters means a team cannot win. "112 points in three quarters, you're not winning basketball games. So it didn't feel good on either end of the floor," he said, according to Sports Illustrated .

The Nets might think catching Boston on a back-to-back gives them an edge. Julius Randle leads the Nets in points, rebounds, and assists, presenting a physical challenge for the Celtics defense. Paul George played 25 minutes Monday and might be tired, but he is the only option to match Randle's size. If the Celtics devolve into isolation plays, tired legs will hurt their defense. They need to run actions early to test Brooklyn's shooting.
Protecting The Lead Is The Only Goal
The Celtics crushed the Chicago Bulls 134-99 on Monday, but that blowout win came with a cost. George and Robinson logged limited minutes to preserve them for this game. If Mazzulla holds White out, the bench rotation shifts to include Pritchard, Sam Hauser, and Baylor Scheierman. Against Chicago, Pritchard netted 19 points during the third quarter, proving his ability to ignite the team. The team has used an 11-man rotation through the first three games.
This game is not about the final score but about the process. The Nets are 0-1 on the road and desperate for a first win. Boston must avoid the complacency that comes with a 2-1 start. The team has two days off before playing the Bulls again on Friday, which offers a recovery window. The focus must remain on executing the game plan without relying on the opposition to make mistakes. As Mazzulla noted, the locker room is built on everyone from 1 through 17 being able to impact winning.
