There was plenty of discussion about the Los Angeles Chargers ' cornerback room heading into the 2026 season. While the group has depth and several players who can be reliable contributors, the Chargers still do not have that obvious, established superstar at cornerback.
That makes this a massive season for Tarheeb Still.

Still enters his third NFL season with the opportunity to change the conversation around the position. The Chargers have already shown that they believe in him, and there are plenty of reasons to think he can take another step forward. Now, though, it is about proving that he can be more than just a reliable piece of the secondary.
He needs to become the guy.
The Chargers currently have Still competing with players like Donte Jackson and Cam Hart for significant snaps at outside corner. Jackson brings veteran experience after a strong 2025 season, while Hart has continued to develop. But Still is the younger player who could potentially establish himself as the long-term answer at the position.
That is what makes 2026 so important.

Still has already shown that he can be trusted. He has the physical tools to play the position and has demonstrated the ability to make plays on the football. He also has experience within the defensive system that helped the Chargers secondary become one of the more dependable units on the team.
With Chris O'Leary taking over as defensive coordinator, Still has an opportunity to establish himself in a slightly different environment while continuing to build on what he has already shown. The Chargers are not asking him to reinvent himself. They need him to take the next step.
And that next step is leadership.
When people talk about the Chargers not having a true star cornerback, that does not necessarily mean they have a bad group. In fact, the depth at the position could end up being one of the team's strengths. But every good defense needs players who can take over when the situation demands it.

Still has a chance to become that player.
The Chargers will face plenty of talented quarterbacks and wide receivers throughout the season, and there will be games when Still is tested repeatedly. Those are the moments that will tell us whether he can actually become the leader of this group.
Interestingly, Still has made it clear that individual recognition isn't what he is chasing. Ahead of his third season, he said his focus is winning a Super Bowl rather than individual accolades.
That mindset is encouraging, but the best way for Still to help the Chargers win is to become the player they can rely on most at cornerback.

The opportunity is there. The talent appears to be there. Now Still has to put everything together.
If he does, the Chargers may finally have the star cornerback that so many people believe this defense is missing. And that could make an already talented defense even more dangerous.
