The San Antonio Spurs grabbed early control of Game 4, and Charles Barkley pointed to one first-quarter sequence as the moment that changed the first half. The Spurs benefited from Mitch Johnson's successful challenge, which quickly altered the Game 4 clash at Madison Square Garden.

Barkley focused on Karl-Anthony Towns picking up his second foul just a minute into the game. The Knicks initially appeared to draw an early foul on Victor Wembanyama , but Johnson challenged the ruling, and officials changed the call to an offensive foul on Towns.
NBA on ESPN posted the clip on X, formerly Twitter, sharing a clip of Barkley explaining why that early whistle gave the Spurs a major opening.
"That play changed the entire dynamic of the first half."
The NBA Hall of Famer's point was straightforward. Once Towns went to the bench, New York lost interior size, spacing and one of its most important defenders against Wembanyama.

The call also protected the Spurs 22-year-old superstar from early foul trouble. Instead of San Antonio managing its superstar carefully, the Knicks had to adjust around Towns' absence and find lineups that could survive without him.
The swing helped the Spurs dictate tempo throughout the first half . They attacked the paint, pushed the pace, and later built a 29-point lead at a time, forcing the Knicks to play from behind in front of their home crowd.
The controversy will not fade quickly. Some fans argued Wembanyama made contact first, while others viewed Towns' hook as enough to overturn the call.
Still, the tactical result was clear. The early challenge gave San Antonio a major advantage and forced New York into an uncomfortable rotation. The Spurs lead the Knicks 90-75 heading to the fourth quarter, putting them 12 minutes from tying the NBA Finals at 2-2.
