Chelsea head to Everton with momentum, but also with a familiar problem. Reece James is out again, and this time the damage looks serious enough to keep him sidelined for around three months.
The club confirmed their captain had undergone minor surgery after suffering a knee injury in training during the international break. That is a bad setback for Xabi Alonso, because James remains one of Chelsea's most important players when fit, and that qualifier keeps doing too much work.
In a short update, Chelsea said: "Reece has already begun his road to recovery and will be supported by the club's medical department at Cobham during this rehabilitation phase."
The timing is awkward. Alonso had gone into the Bournemouth game with better news on the fitness front, revealing that Joao Pedro, Cole Palmer, Moises Caicedo, Marco Palestra and James were all back and available. Chelsea then tore Bournemouth apart 5-1, with the first four involved. James, however, was absent, and the reason has now become clear.

He had already missed the 3-0 defeat to Brentford with a hamstring issue, which also cost him a place in the England squad. Now the latest setback forces another defensive reshuffle before the trip to Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Alonso still has choices. Wesley Fofana can slot in on the right side of defence, while Josh Acheampong is another option if Chelsea want continuity. Palestra can also be used at right wing-back, a role Pedro Neto often filled when injuries hit earlier in the campaign.
In midfield, Caicedo is certain to start. The question is who joins him. Valentin Barco and Romeo Lavia are available, but Jordan Henderson made a very loud case for himself against Bournemouth. Two goals and an assist on his home debut tends to do that, even at 36.
On the left, Jorrel Hato is pushing Pep Chavarria, while Geovany Quenda and Estevao are still waiting for meaningful Premier League minutes.
The attack picks itself for now. Joao Pedro, Palmer and Morgan Rogers have looked sharp, direct and productive, and they should lead the line again against David Moyes' Everton.
There are further absentees. Jamie Gittens remains unavailable after an ankle injury suffered on England Under-21 duty. Alonso said he will be out for "a few weeks". Emmanuel Emegha is also not ready after a minor setback in training.
Chelsea predicted XI vs Everton, 3-4-2-1: Martinez, Fofana, Lacroix, Colwill, Palestra, Caicedo, Henderson, Chavarria, Rogers, Palmer, Joao Pedro.
Unavailable: James, Gittens, Emegha.
Kick-off is at 12:30pm BST on Saturday, October 17, 2026.
