Cincinnati Bengals' former second-round pick Kris Jenkins has not lived up to the high draft selection of the 2024 NFL Draft. Jenkins had an okay second season, totaling 36 tackles, two tackles for loss, three quarterback hits, 27 stops, 13 pressures, and 1.5 sacks across 14 games, four starts, and 497 defensive snaps, the third most at the position on the team. He missed the final three games with a left ankle injury.
With the Bengals acquiring Dexter Lawrence II and Jonathan Allen , the return of B.J. Hill and TJ Slaton , and drafting Landon Robinson, Kris Jenkins faces an uphill battle to make the 53-man roster. If the team prefers to keep Robinson as the team's No. 5 interior defensive lineman, Jenkins could be expendable this weekend.
The Cincinnati Bengals could move an underwhelming 2nd-round pick
Cincinnati Bengals defensive tackle Kris Jenkins Jr. (90) walks to the practice fields at the Bengals NFL practice in Cincinnati on Tuesday, June 4, 2024.
In an NFL.com article, Kevin Patra identified 22 bubble candidates who could be released or traded during roster cuts. For the Bengals, he named Kris Jenkins, noting that Landon Robinson has flashed during the preseason and could push for snaps as a rookie. Patra also added that McKinnley Jackson is a more likely cut candidate than Jenkins.
"A numbers game in Cincy's beefed-up defense has one or both of the 2024 Day 2 draft picks likely out the door. I'd lean Jackson, who's had less of an impact than Jenkins over two seasons, as the more likely candidate to be released. Seventh-round rookie Landon Robinson has flashed during the preseason and is on the verge of pushing for snaps," Patra said.
Here's what a trading team would inherit contractually
Former Michigan player Kris Jenkins walks toward the field during the spring game at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor on Saturday, April 20, 2024.
A trading team would inherit a two-year, $3.376 million contract with $966,000 guaranteed, per Over The Cap . Jenkins is scheduled to earn a $1.509 million salary with $966,000 guaranteed in 2026. Lastly, the former second-round pick is slated to earn a $1.866 million salary in 2027. His affordable contract makes him a prime trade target rather than an outright cut candidate.
