The San Francisco Giants need to improve more than the top of their roster. Their most important offseason needs also include pitchers capable of covering unexpected innings, dependable infield coverage and a bench that provides useful alternatives.
Taylor Clarke is a free agent who fits San Francisco's need for reliable pitching depth . The Giants should be paying close attention to his market.

How Clarke fits with Giants
Clarke profiles as a middle reliever capable of limiting traffic on the bases. He posted a 2.96 ERA and 1.00 WHIP in 73 innings over 71 appearances (two starts) for the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2026.
He issued only 14 walks, making his control the clearest reason for San Francisco to consider signing him.
Clarke's 45 strikeouts also help define the assignment he would receive. He would fit best in the middle innings, where his ability to keep runners off base could allow the Giants to preserve their hardest-throwing relievers for more demanding situations later in games.

A one-year offer worth approximately $3 million to $4 million would recognize Clarke's productive season with Arizona while keeping the financial investment appropriate for his projected role.
Adding him would not eliminate San Francisco's need for more accomplished late-inning options. The Giants would still have to pursue relievers capable of handling setup responsibilities and protecting narrow leads.
However, another pitcher able to make frequent appearances would provide important coverage on days when the team's leading relievers require rest.
Clarke's upside
Clarke would bring value through consistency rather than demanding a prominent role. A dependable middle reliever can prevent manageable situations from becoming late-game emergencies, especially when a starter exits earlier than anticipated.

His control would be particularly useful for a Giants bullpen that needs to reduce unnecessary pressure.
Relievers who avoid giving away bases force opposing hitters to earn their opportunities, allowing the defense to remain involved and keeping innings from escalating because of walks.
Clarke's experience working as both a reliever and occasional starter would also give manager Tony Vitello some flexibility.
Although his primary responsibility would remain in the bullpen, he could cover additional outs when the rotation is disrupted or when another pitcher cannot complete an inning.
That adaptability becomes more important during long stretches without scheduled days off. San Francisco needs pitchers who can accept different assignments without forcing the rest of the bullpen into uncomfortable workloads.

Clarke would also arrive without requiring the Giants to make a lengthy financial commitment. A short agreement would allow him to prove that his performance in Arizona can be sustained while giving San Francisco a practical solution for the middle innings.
He would not be the most prominent addition of the Giants' offseason, but he could become one of the pitchers Vitello trusts most often. For a team seeking steadier bullpen work, that reliability would carry substantial value.
