"My club, my city": Mio Backhaus commits to Werder
While rumors continue to swirl about a possible summer departure, Werder goalkeeper Mio Backhaus has made his position clear. In an emotional interview with 11Freunde magazine, the 21-year-old emphasized his deep bond with the club and the Hanseatic city. Despite the Green-Whites' precarious sporting situation, the talented goalkeeper remains determined.
Although Backhaus was not born in Bremen, he leaves no doubt about his identity. "I am a Bremer ," he made clear in the interview. He has now worn Werder's shirt for eight years, which for him is far more than just a professional stop: "I've been here for eight years, this is my city, my club."

He simply describes his Bundesliga debut for his beloved club as an "unbelievable feeling." That level of identification is sure to please the fans, especially since reports had recently circulated that the club might be willing to sell him next summer if a lucrative offer came in. Backhaus himself, however, seems to be completely ignoring that speculation for now
As great as his enthusiasm for the club is, the goalkeeper is equally realistic about the team's current sporting misery. Werder are stuck deep in the relegation zone — a situation Backhaus has no intention of sugarcoating. While the crisis could theoretically be seen as a "chance to grow as an athlete," the emotional strain weighs heavily.
"If we're being honest: a relegation battle just sucks," the 21-year-old said bluntly. "We all want to get out of it, there's nothing nice about it." For Backhaus, one thing is clear: personal development is taking a back seat for now — top priority is keeping his club in the league.
