The five highest-graded running backs in college football have gotten there in very different ways.
Cincinnati's Cole Tabb has been the most efficient runner in the group. Duke's Nate Sheppard has piled up production as both a runner and receiver. DeSean Bishop has carried a heavy workload for Tennessee, while Wayshawn Parker and Wayne Knight have become multidimensional centerpieces for unbeaten Utah and UCLA teams.
PFN college football analyst Max Chadwick broke down the top five running backs based on PFN's RB Impact metric. RB Impact blends rushing production and efficiency with workload, explosiveness, elusiveness, and receiving value to produce a single season grade.
Here are the five highest-graded running backs in the country entering the second half of the 2026 season.
PFN RB Impact Grade: 88.9
UCLA's quarterback situation has changed dramatically, which should only make Wayne Knight more important to the Bruins over the second half of the season.
Nico Iamaleava suffered a season-ending knee injury against Oregon, leaving UCLA without the quarterback who had started its first five games. Knight was already one of the focal points of the offense before the injury, but Chadwick expects the Bruins to lean even more heavily on a running game that has helped them remain unbeaten.
Knight has rushed for 571 yards and 11 touchdowns while averaging 6.8 yards per carry. He's also contributed 14 receptions for 106 yards and another touchdown, giving UCLA value beyond traditional early-down carries.
That versatility isn't new. Knight transferred to UCLA from James Madison after following head coach Bob Chesney, and his ability to contribute as a runner, receiver, and returner was already established before he arrived in Los Angeles.
His latest touchdown came in UCLA's 17-7 win over Wisconsin, extending his rushing total to 11 scores through six games. With Iamaleava unavailable for the rest of the season, Knight may have to carry an even larger share of the offensive burden as UCLA tries to stay in the College Football Playoff race.
PFN RB Impact Grade: 90.3
Tennessee has dealt with inconsistent quarterback play this season, but its running game has given the offense something it can rely on every week.
DeSean Bishop has been the engine of that group. The senior has rushed for 837 yards and 10 touchdowns through seven games while averaging 6.0 yards per carry. He's been productive despite handling one of the heavier workloads among the nation's top running backs.
His Week 7 performance against Alabama only strengthened his case. Bishop carried the ball 32 times for 159 yards and two touchdowns as Tennessee beat the Crimson Tide 26-10. It was his fourth 100-yard rushing game of the season and gave him 358 yards over his past two home games.
Chadwick views Bishop as one of the main reasons Tennessee has remained in the playoff picture despite not getting consistently elite play at quarterback. He's not merely accumulating yardage because of volume, either. Maintaining a 6.0-yard average on 139 carries is a significant part of why his PFN grade sits above 90.
Bishop's receiving production is modest compared with some of the other backs on this list, but Tennessee hasn't needed him to win that way. His combination of power, efficiency, and workload has made him one of college football's most dependable pure runners.
PFN RB Impact Grade: 92.8
Wayshawn Parker's value to Utah goes well beyond his rushing total.
Parker has 597 rushing yards and seven touchdowns while averaging 6.7 yards per carry, but his receiving production separates him from most high-volume college running backs. He has 19 catches for 201 yards and four touchdowns, giving him 11 total scores through six games.
That makes Parker one of the most dangerous receiving backs in the country. His four touchdown catches are tied for the most among FBS running backs, and he has repeatedly punished defenses that devote too much attention to Utah's rushing attack.

Parker's biggest all-around performance came earlier this season against Iowa State, when he finished with 174 rushing yards and 65 receiving yards while scoring three touchdowns. Even when the explosive plays haven't been as abundant, he's remained the centerpiece of an unbeaten Utah offense.
He rushed for 98 yards on 23 carries in Utah's 27-24 win over Colorado in Week 7, helping the Utes improve to 6-0. Chadwick considers Parker one of the legitimate contenders for the Doak Walker Award because there aren't many backs combining this level of rushing efficiency with comparable receiving production.
Utah doesn't have to take Parker off the field depending on the situation. He can handle volume between the tackles, produce explosive runs, and become a legitimate part of the passing game. That complete profile is reflected in his 92.8 RB Impact grade.
PFN RB Impact Grade: 93.0
Cole Tabb owns the highest PFN grade, but if Chadwick had to hand out the Doak Walker Award today, his choice would be Nate Sheppard.
"To me, it'd be Nate Sheppard out of Duke," Chadwick said. "I think he's been the best running back in college football this year."
The production makes that argument easy to understand. Sheppard has rushed for 820 yards and eight touchdowns while adding 28 catches for 259 yards and four more scores. He's the only FBS player with at least eight rushing touchdowns and four receiving touchdowns this season.
Sheppard has become particularly important after Duke lost major pieces from last year's passing game. Instead of allowing the offense to collapse around those departures, he has become its foundation.
His latest performance demonstrated how many ways he can influence a game. North Carolina held Sheppard to 77 yards on 20 carries, but he compensated by catching 11 passes for 98 yards and a touchdown. Even when an opponent slows him on the ground, Duke can continue funneling the offense through him.
Sheppard is averaging 136.7 rushing yards per game and leads the FBS with 179.8 all-purpose yards per game. He has also scored 12 total touchdowns through six appearances.
That's what separates his award case from a ranking based purely on PFN Impact. The grading model narrowly favors Tabb's extraordinary efficiency, but Chadwick views Sheppard's combination of volume, rushing production, and receiving impact as the strongest overall résumé among the nation's running backs.
PFN RB Impact Grade: 93.2
Cole Tabb doesn't have anything close to Sheppard's rushing volume, but no back in the country has done more with his opportunities according to PFN's grading model.
Tabb has rushed for 448 yards and eight touchdowns while averaging an extraordinary 9.1 yards per carry. Among Power Four running backs, only a small handful have approached that level of per-carry efficiency, and Tabb has supplemented it with 134 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
His Week 7 performance against West Virginia was the clearest example of why his grade sits at the top of the rankings. Tabb rushed for 118 yards and two touchdowns and added 54 receiving yards with another score, producing 172 yards from scrimmage despite Cincinnati's 45-42 loss.

Chadwick's biggest question isn't whether Tabb has played well enough. It's whether Cincinnati is giving him the ball enough.
The Bearcats have one of the most efficient backs in the country, yet Tabb has significantly fewer rushing attempts than the other players near the top of the rankings. That helps explain why his raw rushing yardage doesn't immediately jump off the page alongside Sheppard and Bishop.
PFN's RB Impact metric rewards what Tabb has done with that workload. His efficiency, scoring production, and receiving contribution have been enough to give him a 93.2 grade, narrowly ahead of Sheppard for the No. 1 spot.
If Cincinnati increases his workload over the second half of the season without sacrificing that efficiency, Tabb could start producing the type of counting stats that make his place atop PFN's rankings much easier to recognize.
