The transfer portal and unrestricted player movement has become a major staple of any college football season. After the removal of restrictions on where players can transfer and the ability to move multiple times in a career, thousands of players opt to change programs each year.
Beginning with the January 2026 eligibility window, players can only enter the transfer portal from Jan. 2 to Jan. 16. The spring window that was previously in place has been removed. (Although, an exception is made when a coaching change takes place.)
Athlon Sports details everything you need to know for college football's transfer portal, including key dates, windows of player movement, and exceptions:
What are the dates for college football's transfer portal after the 2025 season?
College football's transfer portal window opened on Jan. 2 and closed on Jan. 16 following the 2025 season. In previous years, the window was open for 30 days, but it was cut to just 15 days this season.
Do players have to find a new team during the portal window?
No. Any player that enters the portal from Jan. 2 to Jan. 16 can commit to a team outside of that window. Players must enter the portal during that window to be eligible to play at a new school the following year. However, players do not have to commit to a school during that timeframe.
Can a player return to a team after entering the portal?
Yes. Any player that enters the portal has the ability to return if his original team has the roster space and wants him to return the following year.
When will the transfer portal open in 2026?
The dates for college football's transfer portal opening after the 2026 season will be determined later this year.
How many transfer windows will college football have in 2026?
After having a winter and spring transfer window in previous seasons, college football will only have one portal period for '26. The spring window that was open in previous years was removed, leaving only the winter option (Jan. 2 through Jan. 16).
Why did college football shift to one portal window?
Roster clarity. Having just one transfer window means rosters are largely set after the portal window for the upcoming year. In previous seasons, a second window in the spring would create extra uncertainty and lead to significant late roster changes. Although the spring window provided an opportunity to improve the roster, having to recruit the roster again and avoid unexpected departures was a key victory for coaches.
Could teams be penalized for accepting transfers that enter the portal outside the window?
Yes. The NCAA Football Oversight Committee proposed legislation in February to penalize schools and coaches who accepted a player that transferred outside of the January window. If the legislation is approved later this spring, any team that accepts a player transferring outside of the January window or a transfer period from a coaching change, would be subject to penalties. Those include a reduction of five roster spots for the following season and a fine of 20% of the football budget. Additionally, the head coach would be suspended from recruiting and on-field coaching for six games.
Can players transfer multiple times?
Yes. College football's transfer rules have changed significantly in recent years. Players are no longer limited on which teams they can transfer to and have unlimited ability to transfer. A player could transfer four times during a four-year playing career.
Are graduate transfers eligible for a separate transfer window?
Not currently. In previous years, graduate transfers had more flexibility in their ability to find a new team. However, starting with the '26 cycle, graduate transfers will follow the same portal rules as all players looking for a new team.
What if a team changes coaches after the January window closes and before the next season begins?
If any team has a late coaching change after the January transfer window and before the '26 season begins, players will have 15 days to enter the portal and consider a move to another program. That window opens five days after a new coach is officially hired.
Is there an exception for players on teams in the national championship?
Yes. In the 2025-26 season, players on Indiana and Miami had five days (Jan. 20-24) following the national championship on Jan. 19 to enter the portal. That window of opportunity is expected to continue into the 2026-27 season.
How many players transfer during a portal cycle?
Per NCAA.com , over 10,500 players combined from all divisions entered the transfer portal after the '25 season. Roughly 3,000-4,000 of those entrants were from the FBS level.
