Commanders provide injury update on quarterback Marcus Mariota
The Washington Commanders were back in Ashburn on Sunday for a walkthrough after Friday's preseason-opening 20-7 win over the Miami Dolphins . Head coach Dan Quinn spoke with the media via Zoom and provided an update on backup quarterback Marcus Mariota.
Mariota, who started Friday's game, left in the first series after only attempting two passes with some sort of leg injury.

"He does have a right knee MCL sprain," Quinn said. "It will knock him out for the rest of the preseason. Optimistic that he'll be ready for the start of the regular season."
With Mariota sidelined for the remainder of the preseason, Washington will rely on third-year QB Sam Hartman and rookie seventh-round pick Athan Kaliakmanis behind Jayden Daniels. Hartman has been on Washington's practice squad for the last two seasons. So, it was natural to wonder if the Commanders would sign another veteran quarterback with Mariota out.
"We are optimistic that for the regular season, at the start, that he'll be ready at that time. And, at this time, no, we do not anticipate anybody else coming in. It will allow more reps, you know, over the next couple of weeks with Sam and Athan in that spot."
Quinn was asked a follow-up question about whether Mariota's injury impacts his preseason plan for Daniels. Quinn indicated that it didn't, for now.

All things considered, this was excellent news for the Commanders. It will be interesting to see how much Daniels plays in the next two preseason games. There's a good chance he doesn't play in the preseason finale against Baltimore because there is a joint practice two days before the game.
Washington opens the regular season on Sept. 13 at Philadelphia.
