The Washington Commanders had a letdown of a season last year, and it mostly came from injuries. Before this season can even get rolling, they're already dealing with several injuries to some of their defensive players, and head coach Dan Quinn offered an update on all fronts.
"Dan Quinn updates on multiple Commanders injuries: OLB K'Lavon Chaisson: injured his knee. DL Johnny Newton: injured his pec … seeing specialist in NY today … could be long-term but will know more after today. OLB Odafe Oweh : strained calf. LB Jordan Magee : shoulder … will be held out this week," Nicki Jhabvala of The Athletic wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
Newton seems to be the one injury that could be out for some time. He was a second-round pick for the Commanders in 2024 and only missed one game in the past two years. Not having him on the field to start the season could be big, and the Commanders may look to fill his void by signing another player.

Those are just the injuries they're dealing with on defense. During their preseason opener, Marcus Mariota suffered an MCL sprain and is expected to miss the next two weeks. The Commanders aren't expected to make a quarterback move, and they expect Mariota to be ready for Week 1.
It doesn't look like Jayden Daniels will be playing in the preseason as they try to keep him healthy going into the regular season. Daniels dealt with several injuries last season, which is one of the main reasons why they weren't able to have much success. His ability to make plays with his arm and legs changes the trajectory of the offense, and his presence was missed.
With all the injuries floating around now, the hope is that they can get healthy over the next few weeks.
