KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – For fans of college football, Saturday's matchup between the No. 8 Kentucky Wildcats and No. 16 Tennessee Volunteers will easily be the most anticipated chapter of the rivalry in recent years.
For starters, the Kentucky Wildcats entered November ranked within the Associated Press' top 10 teams for the first time since 1977, while the Volunteers are off the heels of a crucial loss to the No. 23 South Carolina Gamecocks.

Kentucky, which came into the 2026 season unranked, has won six straight games (five of which have come in the SEC) since losing to Alabama on Sept. 12.
Last season, the Wildcats finished 5-7 (2-6 SEC), scoring just 23 points per game, while averaging just over 325 yards per game, good for 14th in the SEC.
So what changed for Kentucky?
In December, the Wildcats hired former Oregon offensive coordinator Will Stein to be their new head coach, a move that already looks to be one of the best hires in Wildcats history.
In 2026, however, Kentucky is scoring 32.9 points per game (+9.9 from 2025), while averaging 386.4 yards per game (+61.1).

Stein's absence has been felt in Eugene, as the Ducks' offense went from the 11th-best in 2025 to a measly 38th-best so far in 2026.
Kentucky's offense, however, went from 101st to 40th.
Not coincidentally, the Wildcats are currently tied with the Georgia Bulldogs for first place in the SEC.
After hiring Stein, Kentucky also acquired Notre Dame quarterback Kenny Minchey.
That duo has been nothing short of unstoppable.
In his first full season as a starter, Minchey has completed 69% of his passes for 1,755 yards, 14 touchdowns, and just one interception.
Even scarier for Tennessee, perhaps, is how dominant Minchey has been away from home.

In road games this season, the senior signal-caller from Middle Tennessee has completed 72.4% of his passes for 682 yards, seven touchdowns, and no interceptions.
Minchey is not without support offensively, however, as the Wildcats' backfield features a trio of dangerous backs.
C.J. Baxter, Jason Patterson, and Jovantae Barnes have combined for 5.71 yards per carry on 202 attempts, also rushing for 12 total touchdowns.
The most dynamic piece of Kentucky's offense, however, is none other than receiver Kenny Darby.
This season, the true freshman from Louisiana has posted 507 yards on 38 receptions, to go along with three touchdowns.

His 507 yards rank 1st among SEC freshmen.
There is good news for Tennessee, however, in that Kentucky has only beaten the Volunteers inside Neyland Stadium once in the past 40 years.
As Kentucky comes to town with a new and improved offense, though, history will hold little weight in this dramatic ranked matchup.
