With the Los Angeles Chargers off to a 0-6 start this season, there has been lots of trade speculation swirling around the team. Several of their key players have been mentioned as prime candidates to be moved before the NFL's Nov. 10 trade deadline, including edge rusher Khalil Mack and cornerback Donte Jackson.
There is also a chance that wide receiver Quentin Johnston and perhaps even ascendant edge rusher Tuli Tuipulotu will get dealt in the coming days. Some have even suggested that Ladd McConkey, the Chargers' one true wide receiver threat, could end up switching jerseys soon.
But NFL insider Tom Pelissero wrote in a mailbag article that McConkey isn't likely to be moved, and he also revealed the franchise's overall mindset as far as trades in general.
How willing are the Chargers to make a trade?
"Joe, the Chargers haven't shown much interest in trading anyone to this point," Pelissero wrote. "At 0-6 coming out of the bye, they still believe they have a chance to turn things around and play meaningful football late in the season. But even if they do go into sell mode, I'd be shocked if Ladd McConkey is on the move. He's still only 24 years old, in the third year of his rookie contract, and arguably the most important piece of the Chargers offense besides quarterback Justin Herbert."
McConkey, a second-round draft pick in 2024 out of the University of Georgia, shone brightly as an NFL rookie with 1,149 yards and seven touchdowns on 82 catches. Last season, his production dipped to 66 catches, 789 yards and six touchdowns.
So far this season, McConkey has caught 13 passes for 200 yards and one touchdown in five games. He has been banged up this year, and he recently cleared concussion protocol after suffering a concussion in L.A.'s Week 6 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.
The organization needs to decide who is worth keeping and building around for next season and who needs to go. One has to wonder how much of its reported reluctance to accept trade offers is merely posturing, as someone such as Mack could command a high Day Three draft pick.
