BOSTON — The scene outside TD Garden was unusual, two hours before Friday night's game.
Dozens of fans milling around Causeway Street were wearing Mavericks jerseys and Celtics hats before Boston hosted Dallas . They were neither confused nor undecided. Nearly all of those Dallas jerseys had " Flagg 32″ on the back.
It's easy to forget amid all of the excitement surrounding Jayson Tatum that Friday's game was a hard ticket even before it became up the Celtics star's return.
It was the first game at TD Garden for Mavericks No. 1 overall draft pick Cooper Flagg, a native of Newport, Maine. That state has a long history of supporting its favorite sons and daughters.
So on Friday, they poured onto 95 South and boarded Amtrak's Downeaster to come see Flagg. They made their presence felt immediately roaring for him during the pregame introductions.
"I had a lot of people come from back home. That part of the experience was really cool," he said. "The energy was great. It was an incredible environment and an incredible place to play."
He put on a solid show for his friends, family and fellow Mainers with 16 points, eight rebounds and six assists.
Flagg, who grew up a Celtics fan and shares a Duke connection with Tatum was asked if he could ever see himself playing for Boston.
"I love being a Maverick. I don't want anything else," he said. "It was incredible to be able play here at a place I came as a kid. I think it's going to be incredibly fun to come and play here for the rest of my career."
